A New Rayman Is In Development, With Creator Michel Ancel Consulting

As a die-hard fan of the whimsical and enchanting world of Rayman, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation upon hearing about the new game. Having grown up with the original side-scroller back in ’95, I’ve witnessed Michel Ancel‘s creative genius unfold across various iterations of this beloved franchise.

Ubisoft is currently developing a brand-new Rayman game, with the series originator, Michel Ancel, providing his expertise as a consultant. At present, both Ubisoft’s Milan and Montpellier studios are delving into the creative process for this upcoming game title.

According to Eurogamer’s latest report, there are plans underway for a new Rayman game at Ubisoft. This news follows Insider Gaming’s earlier speculation about a remake being developed for the franchise. A representative from Ubisoft has confirmed that teams at Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have begun an initial phase of exploration on the Rayman brand. The project is still in its early stages, but more information will be revealed later. Michel Ancel, the creator of the Rayman universe, is being consulted to maintain consistency within the franchise’s world as the game progresses.

Originally, Rayman was conceived by Ancel, yet in 2020, he faced investigations by Ubisoft due to accusations of fostering a toxic work environment. This occurred not long after his departure from the video game corporation. At that time, he openly refuted these claims.

Ubisoft Montpellier’s involvement in this new Rayman project is also of note because it recently spearheaded development on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Earlier this week, Ubisoft stated the team behind the metroidvania game had been “shifted to other projects.” It’s possible this Rayman game is one of those “projects.”

The first Rayman game debuted in 1995 as a side-scroller. Given that this upcoming project appears to be a straight remake, it’s logical that the creators behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown are involved due to their expertise.

In the latest downloadable content (DLC) for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope on the Nintendo Switch, we saw Rayman make an appearance again. His most recent outing in the primary series was back in 2013 with Rayman Legends.
