As a dedicated binge-watcher who’s seen more TV series than I care to count, let me tell you that Severance has easily made it into my top picks of all time. The first season, now available on Blu-ray, is nothing short of a masterpiece in corporate satire and dystopian storytelling.

In 2022, TopMob named Severance as their favorite TV series. This sci-fi production is set in a future not too far off where technology enables individuals to separate their work memories from their personal ones, a process called “severing.” The advantage of this procedure is that people live their lives without ever recalling work (or other unpleasant events, as the show gradually uncovers). However, in reality, severed individuals essentially become two distinct entities – they lead one life outside of work and another at work. The work persona only experiences work-related matters, effectively sleeping when they leave the office and waking up upon returning, akin to falling asleep and waking up while transitioning between their professional and personal lives.
Throughout its initial nine-episode run, the series unfolds into rather chilling and dismal scenarios, laced with plenty of witty commentary on corporate culture. The show manages to be both humorous and unsettling at the same time, which is a significant part of what makes it so compelling.
Apple TV+ shows seldom come out on Blu-ray, particularly in the United States. An exception is Ted Lasso, which can be found as a complete series titled “Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way” on Amazon. Shows like For All Mankind, See, The Morning Show, and Truth Be Told have been released on physical media, but only in the UK. If you’re a fan of Severance, you may want to grab the physical release while it’s available, as content from other platforms often vanishes from Apple TV+’s streaming service over time.
