As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I have seen many tales of cinematic triumph and tragedy unfold before my very eyes. But none has quite captivated me like the story of Eva Longoria‘s heroic act that saved the “John Wick” franchise from an untimely demise.
10 years ago, the first “John Wick” movie premiered in cinemas, kickstarting another highly successful action series for Keanu Reeves (earning over $1 billion worldwide across four films). However, this achievement might never have occurred without Eva Longoria. In an interview with Business Insider, directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch recalled that Longoria stepped in at the last minute, providing $6 million just before filming to bridge an unforeseen funding gap.
With just a few days left, we faced a significant loss of nearly $6 million due to a funding issue during our interim financing, as explained by Stahelski. We were self-financing to secure the bond, but one of our investors failed to gather the necessary funds in time.
The makers of “John Wick,” including Reeve, had personally funded the project due to their belief in it, while producer Basil Iwanyk went as far as using three of his personal credit cards to add funds to the budget. CAA, in an attempt to secure financing for the movie and save the project, provided some actors with the chance to invest in the film.
[Eva Longoria] stepped in just in time to bridge the financial gap, with her assistance happening barely a day before we would have had to close down the movie production and leave,” Stahelski stated. “After filming, Basil invited us for dinner, and we were reminiscing about all the troubles we faced. He casually mentioned, ‘By the way, guess who provided the gap financing for you? Eva Longoria.’ We were taken aback and exclaimed, ‘Really!’
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I found myself having lunch at the iconic Chateau Marmont, an honor bestowed upon me by directors Stahelski and Leitch. The reason for this special occasion? None other than my role in saving “John Wick” from obscurity. What an incredible experience!
Stahelski recalled her saying, ‘I hadn’t expected it to succeed,’ as they went, while Leitch shared that later on, Longoria told him that investing in ‘John Wick’ was the wisest financial decision she had made.
Was it ever decided by the directors to cast Longoria in one of the “John Wick” sequels based on her investment? According to Leitch, she expresses a strong desire to participate in action roles, and he is eager to collaborate with her; they are currently seeking an opportunity to do so.
