YouTube investigating claims that Premium subscribers are still getting ads

As a long-time YouTube Premium subscriber, I’ve grown accustomed to enjoying my favorite content without interruptions from ads. However, it seems that even the mighty YouTube has stumbled this time, serving ads to some Premium users. This is like offering me a buffet dinner and then telling me to stand in line for fast food. It feels like a cruel joke!

YouTube is looking into allegations, spread on various social platforms, stating that users with a Premium subscription are still being shown advertisements.

For a while now, YouTube has changed its approach towards advertising on the site. This includes stricter measures against ad-blockers and introducing ads even when a video is paused. As more methods for ad-free viewing diminish, viewers have grown increasingly annoyed.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, is experimenting with an affordable alternative to its premium subscription. This new plan, dubbed “limited,” will reduce advertisements but also exclude access to YouTube Music and provide fewer ad-free hours. Some users may find this option more appealing than the full premium subscription due to its lower cost, even though they still see ads.

On Monday, October 21st, a Reddit user posted that they were still receiving ads on the platform, even though they have a Premium subscription.

In this screenshot, you can see the YouTube Premium icon located at the upper-left corner, signifying an active membership. Instead of the video player, a Google Workspace advertisement is displayed.

A different Reddit user mentioned they encountered an advertisement for YouTube’s gaming platform ‘Playables’ as they were browsing through the Shorts section.

Am I seeing “ads” even with premium now?!

After noticing the allegation, Android Authority contacted YouTube. In response, YouTube shared a statement indicating that they are currently looking into why the advertisement might have been shown.

YouTube has informed a publication that premium subscribers are supposed to be ad-free on their home feed, but an issue may have occurred causing ads to appear. The platform is investigating this and has alerted the affected user about reaching out to customer support.

YouTube Premium subscribers are stated to enjoy an ad-free experience, meaning they won’t have any ads play before, in the middle of, or after videos on any device they use.

Following the announcement by YouTube, it was disclosed that their sleep timer feature would no longer be exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers, making it accessible globally.
