As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of film buffery under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of Gladiator 3 has me as excited as Maximus in the Colosseum facing off against a Nemean lion. Ridley Scott‘s knack for storytelling and his ability to weave complex narratives has never ceased to amaze me, and the idea of exploring more of the Roman Empire through the eyes of Lucius Verus is tantalizingly intriguing.
Approximately a quarter of a century passed before Ridley Scott decided to return to his first and currently only Oscar-winning film, Gladiator. In the upcoming month, Scott will reveal the next installment in the Gladiator saga, known as Gladiator 2. Lately, Scott has hinted that he’s already drafting ideas for Gladiator 3; however, a follow-up movie isn’t guaranteed at this point.
When asked if a third film is in the works, Scott replied to EW, “People often ask, ‘Do you have [a third movie]?’ And I say, ‘Yes, certainly.’ But the truth is, we don’t have it just yet. When I was working on Gladiator 2, I was already considering who would survive, and it’s best if there’s a survivor.
In simpler terms, Scott’s earlier remarks suggest that the main character Lucius Verus, portrayed by Paul Mescal in the upcoming film, is likely to live through the movie’s events. Contrary to this, Mescal has stated that he and Scott have not talked about any plans for a sequel as of now.
Mescal stated, “No, that chair is entirely Ridley’s to move,” when asked by EW about a potential Gladiator 3. “It’s his project. However, if he has any plans for it, I would be thrilled. Frankly, I haven’t heard much from him about it, so I’m quite curious.
If a third Gladiator film is made, Lucius will be the character who links all three movies together. Spencer Treat Clark portrayed Lucius as a child in the original Gladiator, alongside Russell Crowe’s Maximus. The bond between these characters has been emphasized in one of the latest trailers, reinforcing a popular fan theory about them.
Gladiator 2 will hit theaters on November 22.
