As a gamer with a profound love for Superman and the actors who brought him to life, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe when recalling Christopher Reeve‘s guest appearance in Smallville. The nostalgia that permeates this tale is almost palpable, like biting into an aged cheese that just gets better with time.
Christopher Reeve, renowned as one of the top and dearly admired actors portraying Superman, continues to be seen as an inspiration for the character. His last performance as Superman was in the 1987 film “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace”, yet he remains a significant figure in the realm of comic book movie adaptations. Years later, due to his impactful portrayal, he was asked to make a guest appearance on the TV show “Smallville”, which centered around the life of young Clark Kent. In this series, Reeve took on the role of Dr. Virgil Swann, who became the first person to inform Clark about his Kryptonian origins.
The occasion was particularly significant not just for enthusiasts of Superman, the cast from the television series, but also for Reeve personally, who found the atmosphere on the Smallville set so appealing that he objected to the nurse looking after him as he wanted to extend his stay there. In the end, the nurse had to resort to threatening to remove the actor from the set.
During a panel at the New York Comic Con (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Tom Welling, known for his role as Clark Kent in Smallville, reminisced about past memories.
Initially, he was expected to stay for three hours, but it seemed more like six and a half hours passed before he finally decided to leave. He kept expressing that he didn’t want to go. The plan was for him to finish all his filming, depart, and let someone else take over. But he insisted on sticking with me! It reached a point where his nurse threatened to call the police if he didn’t leave. He was puzzled by her threat, asking “on who?” She replied, “On you! You need to go now; you can’t stay here anymore!” Despite the tense situation, it turned out well, and the story was exceptional.
In spite of his initial hesitation, it was eventually Reeve who parted ways with the set, and the Smallville episode where he appeared is considered one of the standout ones. Moreover, Tom Welling, during an interview on the TalkVille podcast, revealed that he received Reeves’ approval to take on the role of Superman in the future.
