‘God of War’ Amazon TV Series Enlists Ronald D. Moore as New Showrunner

As a fan who has grown up with the magic of storytelling woven by Ronald D. Moore, I couldn’t be more thrilled about his new venture into the world of “God of War”. With an impressive resume that includes iconic series like “Outlander”, “For All Mankind”, and his legendary work in the Star Trek franchise, it’s clear that this mastermind is no stranger to epic narratives.

The “God of War” TV series adaptation at Amazon has found its new showrunner.

It’s been verified that Ronald D. Moore is now onboard as a writer, head of production, and executive producer for the show. Moore has recently signed up, following news about the departure of the original showrunner, Rafe Judkins.

Judkins, together with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, departed from “God of War.” According to reports, they had finalized several scripts for the series, but Amazon and co-studio Sony Pictures Television ultimately chose a distinct creative path.

Moore has rejoined Sony Pictures Television following a new agreement, having previously left for a contract with Disney and 20th Television. Prior to this, he had been associated with Sony for around ten years, during which period he was responsible for hit series such as “Outlander” and “For All Mankind.” Currently, an “Outlander” prequel and a spinoff of “For All Mankind” are in development.

Besides his renowned contributions to academic philosophy, Ronald D. Moore is equally celebrated for his work in the “Star Trek” universe. He was instrumental in television shows such as “The Next Generation,” “Voyager,” and “Deep Space Nine,” and penned the films “Star Trek: Generations” and “Star Trek: First Contact.” However, it is Moore’s revival of “Battlestar Galactica” that has truly made him a household name. This series spanned four seasons on Syfy (formerly Sci-Fi Channel) and led to two TV movies, concluding in 2009. A spin-off series, “Caprica,” aired on Syfy for one season in 2010.

He is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.

In the ongoing “God of War” project, Cory Barlog from Santa Monica Studio continues his role as executive producer, alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from Playstation Productions. Additionally, Yumi Yang from Santa Monica Studio and Roy Lee from Vertigo are also part of the team. The show was initially commissioned for production by Amazon Prime Video in 2022.

Set in the world of the 2018 hit game developed by Santa Monica Studio, the series focuses on Kratos, also known as the God of War. After distancing himself from his violent past in ancient Greece, Kratos swears off combat and settles in the Norse land of Midgard, according to Amazon’s summary. Following the death of his wife, Kratos embarks on a perilous journey with his distant son Atreus to fulfill her last wish: to scatter her ashes from the summit of a high peak. However, this seemingly ordinary journey turns out to be a hidden epic quest that will challenge the bond between father and son, compelling Kratos to face new deities and creatures for the survival of the universe.

Deadline first reported Moore joining the series.
