‘Venom 3’ Targets Franchise-Low $65 Million Opening Weekend

As a seasoned movie-goer who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous cinematic franchises, I must admit that the box office performance of “Venom: The Last Dance” intrigues me. With its third installment, it seems Sony is banking on the unwavering loyalty of fans despite lackluster reviews in the past.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly waiting for “Venom: The Last Dance” to make its grand entrance this Friday, aiming to leave its mark with a whopping $65 million at the box office. Being the final chapter in the gripping antihero saga led by Tom Hardy, it’s all set to storm into 4,125 North American cinemas!

Compared to the previous two Venom movies, the sales for the upcoming Venom 3 are expected to be significantly lower, with earnings that might not reach the $80 million opening of 2018’s Venom or the $90 million opening of Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021. However, it is hoped that international audiences will help boost its box office performance. The projected overseas earnings for Venom 3 are around $85 million, bringing its global debut to approximately $150 million.

The film titled “The Last Dance” had a production cost of $120 million, excluding global marketing expenses. As theater owners retain nearly half of the box office revenue, “Venom 3” needs to sustain its presence on the screen beyond its initial release in order to cover that expense. Kelly Marcel, who penned the first two installments, took up directing duties for this PG-13 sequel. The movie stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a tenacious investigative journalist, and his unintended partner, the parasite Venom. Both characters are on the run from their respective realms. Since “Venom” belongs to the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters, it doesn’t intersect with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe’s comic book characters. (However, it did make a brief appearance in the closing credits of Sony’s 2021 blockbuster “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”)

The movie titled “Venom,” which is known as a foe of Spider-Man in Marvel Comics, has shown itself to be impervious to criticism. Critics heavily criticized the first two films, with the original garnering a 30% average on Rotten Tomatoes and the second slightly improving at 57%. However, these unfavorable opinions didn’t discourage fans who made “Venom” earn $856 million globally and “Let There Be Carnage” gather $506 million worldwide. The reviews for the third installment have yet to be released.
