As a seasoned gamer with decades of virtual combat under my belt, I must confess that the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops 6, has me more excited than a kid on Christmas morning. The fact that Activision’s ingenious marketing ploy, The Replacer, made a cameo during an NFL game is nothing short of genius!
The possible launch date of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 might not be marked as a national holiday, but it certainly won’t deter some gaming enthusiasts from concocting a reason to skip work on that day. This is essentially the concept behind Activision’s character, The Replacer. Portrayed by Peter Stormare from Until Dawn, and occasionally other actors, The Replacer takes over when individuals feel compelled to play Call of Duty. Over the weekend, one of these stand-ins even filled in for the Los Angeles Rams’ mascot during an NFL game.

In that incident, it appears there might have been a misunderstanding since The Replacer in the Rampage mask met the real LA Rams mascot, Rampage. It was quite understandable to mix them up! Maybe he was scheduled for an appearance this coming Sunday, following the launch of Black Ops 6. Let’s wait and see if Rampage has gotten over his temporary stand-in yet.
Given that sports remain one of the few types of broadcast programming that continue to attract a substantial viewership, video game and film companies are becoming more inventive in their promotional strategies for their projects during these events. For instance, actors unexpectedly appeared during the Major League Baseball playoffs to announce the upcoming release of Smile 2.
Stormare officially reprised his role as the original Replacer last month in a very funny ad where he served as a substitute fireman, a family man at dinner, and even the Pope. Unfortunately, since The Replacer isn’t real, the rest of us will have to make other arrangements when Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 hits Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 25. And yes, it’s on Game Pass on day one. To help you get ready for the launch later this week, we’ve shared the length of Black Ops 6’s campaign, whether the game has multiple endings, how the progression and prestige works, and why the Riot Shield won’t be available.
