“I Think I’m Going to Go Mental.” John Leguizamo Was Supposed to Replace George Clooney in ER, but the Role Was Too Much of a Challenge

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the labyrinthine world of virtual operations, I can’t help but empathize with John Leguizamo‘s experience on ER. Having only dabbled in the realm of 16-hour workdays myself, I can imagine the toll it must have taken on him, particularly when transitioning from theater and movies where the pace is more leisurely.

George Clooney initially shone as the lead in the medical drama ER, but decided to depart from the series following its fifth season. Although he made a brief reappearance later, his involvement with this show essentially concluded towards the end of the fifth season. The producers then had the task of finding an alternate character to take over for the one George portrayed, as his departure left a noticeable void in the storyline.

The role was assigned to Dr. Victor Clemente, portrayed by John Leguizamo, but due to the demanding nature of the medical TV series, the actor found himself overwhelmed and decided to depart from the production after just twelve episodes. In his own words, he confessed that the fast-paced schedule drained him excessively, causing him to realize that the project was not a good fit for him despite initial enthusiasm. (Quote from AV Club)

Initially, I was expected to replace George Clooney as the lead doctor and eventually serve as chief physician until retirement. However, being accustomed to giving my all in theater and film productions, working 16 hours a day took a toll on me. After just a few episodes, I felt overwhelmed and mentally exhausted, saying, “I think I might lose it. I can’t keep up with this pace.” As a result, I made the decision to step down – my first time resigning from anything. The demands were immense, the work was grueling. Now I understand why they receive such high pay, as that kind of work is incredibly tough.

As a gamer diving into a new role, I shared my experience working on ER, where the alarm clock rang earlier than usual. Before stepping onto the set, I’d meet with real-life doctors, who enlightened me about their day-to-day tasks and demonstrated the intricacies of their surgical scenes. We also went over the script to ensure I was well-versed in the dialogue and the medical jargon.

That ordeal was incredibly challenging; it ranked as the hardest thing I’ve ever tackled. As I went through it, I found myself thinking, “I’m grateful for this opportunity. I hadn’t realized it could be this grueling.” It made me value returning to independent film even more. I thought, “Wow, this is a breeze. Just ten pages per day. What a privilege!

The actor chose to surrender and conclude his journey on ER, having starred in a total of twelve episodes. However, unlike Leguizamo who was meant to take over his role, Clooney ended up appearing in a staggering one hundred and eight episodes of the TV series instead.
