Spanish Public Broadcaster’s RTVE’s VOD Platform RTVE Play+ Launches in Asia and Oceania

As a seasoned movie connoisseur who has traversed the cinematic landscapes of continents and cultures, I can confidently say that RTVE Play+ is set to create ripples in the global streaming arena, particularly in Asia and Oceania. With Spain’s rich storytelling tradition and the insatiable demand for Spanish content in these regions, it seems like a match made in heaven.

On October 22nd, this coming Tuesday, Spain’s main public TV broadcaster, Radio Televisión Española (RTVE), plans to debut its international video-on-demand over-the-top (OTT) platform, RTVE Play+, in the regions of Asia and Oceania.

The timing of the announcement is quite opportune, especially with the latest positive assessment from the Spanish trade and investment organization ICEX and the entertainment analytics organization Parrot Analytics.

At Mipcom on October 21st, the presented report highlighted Asia and Oceania as the areas with the greatest and swiftest increasing appetite for content originating from Spain. The interest in Asia stood at a full 100%, while Oceania showed an impressive 175%. According to this report, Spain ranks fourth among the top five global earnings sources for non-English content, establishing itself as the foremost European and Spanish-speaking market for content.

The data shown by ICEX and Parrot Analytics at their annual gathering in Cannes indicates that Spanish content has brought in approximately $5.1 billion through global streaming services over the last four years. RTVE Play+ could potentially benefit from the rapidly growing interest in Spanish content.

RTVE Play+, which is already accessible in the Americas and Europe, will broaden its presence to include Japan, India, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Australia.

The platform, featuring top-tier audiovisual content from RTVE, plays a crucial role in RTVE’s global expansion plans, bolstered by the public broadcaster’s decades-long commitment to producing exceptional content.

Additionally, RTVE mentioned its goal of leveraging this platform to boost Spain’s flourishing audiovisual sector on an international level.

During its debut, RTVE Play+ was identified as a crucial move in RTVE’s plan to expand the worldwide dissemination of its top-tier content, breaking through geographical limitations and capitalizing on advanced technology.

The service provides a variety of high-quality content, encompassing everything from series, movies, and documentaries, to news and entertainment, along with live broadcasts.

The shows exhibited at RTVE’s fifth annual exhibition in Madrid last May could potentially be streamed on RTVE Play+. One noteworthy series that caught attention is “La Ley del Mar,” starring Luis Tosar and inspired by a real-life event involving two fishermen who discovered a boat carrying 50 migrants who had been drifting for days.

Additionally, we have “Detective Touré,” the pioneering Spanish television show boasting a lead character of African descent, jointly produced by RTVE, Detective Touré AIE, Tornasol Media, DeAPlaneta, and EITB.

As a cinephile myself, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been part of the team bringing RTVE’s first joint production with Serbia to life. This captivating project, titled “Scars,” is a collaboration with Spain’s Plano a Plano and Dopamine, and is adapted from a compelling novel. Can’t wait to see it unfold on the big screen!

In their newest non-fiction production, titled “Conquering the World,” in collaboration with Onza TV, presents Valladolid chef Javier Peña embarking on a global journey to taste local specialties. At the end of each episode, there’s a quick tutorial on cooking one of the dishes he sampled.
