As a cinephile with a penchant for gritty British dramas and a soft spot for Scottish noir, I must say that “Irvine Welsh’s Crime” piques my interest immensely. The pedigree of talent involved, from Dougray Scott to the “Trainspotting” author himself, promises a gripping narrative that delves deep into the dark underbelly of urban life.
Cineflix Rights has finalized multiple agreements for “Irvine Welsh’s Crime,” featuring Dougray Scott, who won an International Emmy for this role, in the leading part.
The television series has been purchased by Telefonica’s pay TV service Movistar Plus+ (based in Spain), SBS (in Australia), RTE (Ireland), Blue Entertainment (Switzerland), as well as Canal+ for viewers in Luxembourg, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the Netherlands.
“Irvine Welsh’s Crime” was commissioned by ITVX and BritBox in the U.K.
The series focuses on Detective Inspector Ray Lennox, portrayed by Scott, who is grappling with personal turmoil as he delves into intense criminal investigations in a city teetering on the brink.
The show, based on Irvine Welsh’s novel (the author of “Trainspotting”), features John Simm, Joanna Vanderham, Angela Griffin, Ken Stott, and Jamie Sives in its cast. Simm is known for his roles in “Life on Mars” and “Grace,” Vanderham from “Warrior” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” Griffin from “Harlots” and “White Lines,” Stott from “The Dig” and “Fortitude,” and Sives from “Guilt” and “Too Close.
Tim Mutimer, head of Cineflix Rights, commented: “Irvine Welsh’s personal adaptation of his renowned novels, coupled with Dougray Scott’s captivating, award-winning acting, has made this series a hit for us globally. We expect more successful deals during Mipcom.
The show is produced by Buccaneer and Off Grid Film & TV.
These deals were negotiated by Sabrina Ayala, a sales consultant based in Iberia, Italy, French-speaking Europe, and French Canada. The agreement with RTE was finalized by Sandra Piha, senior VP of sales, who covers the U.K., Ireland, Scandinavia, and Chris Bluett, senior VP of sales, Asia Pacific and Benelux, sealed the deal with SBS.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on an intriguing lineup of upcoming series that has caught my attention. Cineflix Rights’ latest offerings include “Virdee,” a gripping crime drama based on the critically acclaimed novels by A.A. Dhand, which BBC will be airing soon. For those who can’t get enough of supernatural action, prepare for the special edition of “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” on Tubi. If dystopian thrillers are more your speed, keep an eye out for “Heart Attack,” a heart-pounding production destined for Fuji TV. Lastly, for fans of poignant love stories, the 2024 Séries Mania Official Selection, “So Long, Marianne,” inspired by the timeless romance between Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen, promises to be a moving experience. Each of these series offers a unique narrative that will undoubtedly captivate audiences worldwide.
Here are some freshly titled shows joining previously aired seasons of the International Emmy award-winning espionage series “Tehran,” now available on Apple TV+; the Australian crime drama “Last King of the Cross” streaming on Paramount+; “Reginald the Vampire,” featuring Jacob Batalon from “Spider-Man,” airing on SYFY in America; and the cozy crime procedural “Whitstable Pearl” on Acorn TV.
