This Creepy New Horror Game Unravels A Mystery Using A Cursed Photo Album

As a seasoned horror game enthusiast with a penchant for the chilling and the uncanny, I can’t help but be intrigued by the upcoming indie gem, Corporeal. Having spent countless hours immersed in the haunting narratives of Sam Barlow’s Immortality and the eerie home movies of Sinister, I find myself drawn to this unique blend of real-life photography and non-linear puzzle-solving.

In October, there are numerous horror games available to play, some even before Halloween ends. Although it won’t be out soon, the chilling game Corporeal seems promising enough to extend the spooky season into the following month. Developed by the indie team Cold Out in New Zealand, this paranormal mystery game is unique as it uses a real-life photo album instead of in-game graphics for gameplay.

In this trailer, the result of the choice presented is a game that gives an eerily authentic experience. It has a slight resemblance to games by Sam Barlow and Half Mermaid, like Immortality, and incorporates hints of the underrated horror film Sinister from 2012. In this game, a writer explores old home movies and photographs to unravel the haunting history of their new home.

In this game, players will navigate through a photo album with retro-style interfaces and engage in puzzles that don’t follow a linear path, gradually unraveling the enigma of a cursed family at its core. While I’ve suggested comparisons to Sinister and Immortality, the developers have also drawn parallels to Annapurna’s Storyteller merged with the chilling horror film, Lake Mungo.

Set in the ’90s, Corporeal joins an expanding collection of projects, notably those with a haunting theme (such as I Saw The TV Glow and Long Legs), which delve into that decade. The ’90s nostalgia is thriving.

Corporeal is coming to Steam, though no release date was yet revealed.
