U.K.’s Channel 5 Boards Premium Docuseries ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’ With Bettany Hughes (EXCLUSIVE)

As a film enthusiast with a deep-rooted passion for history and archaeology, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming docuseries “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” Having traversed various continents myself, albeit not on such an epic quest as Bettany Hughes, I can only imagine the awe she must feel as she follows in the footsteps of ancient warriors, pilgrims, emperors, and tourists.

The UK television channel owned by Paramount, Channel 5, has purchased the exclusive rights to air the high-quality historical documentary series titled “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” This series is a joint production between Keshet International (KI) and SandStone Global.

A three-part documentary, now being filmed, is adapted from Professor Bettany Hughes’ popular book with the same title. In this series, historian and television host Hughes embarks on a global journey spanning three continents. She replicates the paths taken by historical figures such as ancient warriors, pilgrims, emperors, and tourists, while exploring each of the world’s seven wonders – like the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia.

Among the countries Hughes will visit on her epic quest are Turkey, Greece and Egypt.

SandStone Global is responsible for creating a program that blends archaeological insights, fresh discoveries, and advanced technology, allowing Hughes to employ digital recreations of some remarkable artifacts or structures as part of the show.

The series will be aired on Channel 5 in the U.K. in 2025, with the network’s Adrian Padmore being the one who commissioned it.

Hughes stated, ‘Following extensive research spanning three continents – from deserts to mountains and even across the high seas – my team and I have finally unveiled the colossal work involved in constructing the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This series will not only highlight the effort required, but also delve into their significance for ancient societies and why they continue to captivate us today. With privileged access to recent excavations and discoveries, we’ll walk in the footsteps of tourists, warriors, pilgrims, saints, and emperors who marveled at these awe-inspiring wonders, some of humanity’s greatest accomplishments.’ I’m excited to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite content distributor has acquired global rights for an exceptional series, a cornerstone of their Mipcom lineup alongside other gripping titles such as Double Act’s “SAS: Catching the Criminals,” Woodcut Media’s “Catch Me If You Can,” and Perpetual Entertainment’s “Hitler’s Treasure Hunters.” This year, Keshet International is bringing its largest team since 2019 to the market, making it a must-attend event from October 21st to 24th in Cannes.

Kelly Wright, Distribution Manager at Keshet International, expressed: “We’re excited to announce that Channel 5 will be our broadcast partner in the UK for ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’. We initially joined this high-end documentary series through our co-development agreement with SandStone. It’s a privilege to present this project at Mipcom, especially as Bettany explores these ancient sites scattered across the Mediterranean. We look forward to updating international buyers about Bettany’s upcoming TV expedition.
