As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the Venom movies have been a rollercoaster ride of symbiotic mayhem! From Tom Hardy’s captivating portrayal of both Eddie Brock and the titular Venom to the action-packed adventures these characters embark on, it’s been an exciting journey to witness.
Ready for a rundown on the Venom films, their number, and the correct viewing sequence? Let’s dive into it!
It’s fortunate that the Venom film series started in 2018, so if you want to watch the whole collection again, it’s much more manageable compared to the vast array of Marvel films released thus far.
In the movie Venom, Tom Hardy breathed life into a fresh iteration of the infamous symbiote, while also portraying Eddie Brock, who was utterly drained. This double role revitalized the supervillain (with its positive and negative aspects), but now it’s time for the story to conclude.
Prior to settling in for Venom: The Last Dance, here’s a breakdown of how to engage with the Venom film series.
How many Venom movies are there?
There are three Venom movies total: Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Venom: The Last Dance.
In simple terms, while Venom made his initial big-screen debut in the 2007 film Spider-Man 3, it’s important to note that the standalone Venom movie franchise exists in a different cinematic universe. This means that if we count only those films focused on Venom, there are just three Venom movies in total.
In simpler terms, “The Last Dance” marks the end of the Venom series featuring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, implying that this is their farewell performance.
How to watch the Venom movies in order
You can enjoy the Venom movies without worrying about watching them in a specific order, as their narrative flows chronologically regardless. Therefore, for the most immersive experience, it’s recommended that you simply watch the films as they were released and follow the story as it unfolded over time.
Venom (2018)
In the initial Venom film, we’re introduced to Eddie Brock prior to his alien-related experience. At this point, he’s a hard-up reporter seeking to make a breakthrough. The significant lead comes from his attorney fiancée, Anne, who works for a dubious engineering conglomerate named the Life Foundation.
Following a dispute with CEO Carlton Drake over accusations of perilous human trials for symbiote compatibility testing, Eddie secretly infiltrates the research facility. However, unintentionally, he becomes biologically connected to the symbiote known as Venom. Consequently, Eddie and Venom must figure out how to live harmoniously while simultaneously battling the Life Foundation to bring it down.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
In the mid-credits scene of Venom, it’s clear that the main antagonist for this sequel is none other than Carnage. So far, Eddie and Venom have been doing a decent job of keeping the city clean by taking down baddies, but this helps Eddie grapple with his moral dilemmas while giving Venom his fill of human sustenance. However, things take a turn for the worse when I find myself face-to-face with infamous serial killer Cletus Kasady during an interview in prison.
As I stand there, witnessing the bond that forms between them, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of kinship with Carnage, one that seems to take hold of me. Soon enough, I find myself enveloped by its destructive power. Eddie and Venom must then race against time to put an end to Carnage’s rampage, all while Eddie struggles to keep his own life from falling apart at the seams.
Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
In the concluding movie of the series titled “The Last Dance,” we witness the culmination for both characters, Eddie and Venom. Fugitive Eddie stands charged with the murder of Detective Mulligan, while Venom uncovers a plan by Knull to break free from his confinement.
In unison, they’re fleeing for separate motives, yet a covert military mission looms with the potential to ensnare them both. The climax of the upcoming film remains uncertain as to whether Eddie or Venom will meet their demise; however, it’s clear that this specific alliance is nearing its conclusion.
Does Spider-Man 3 count?
As a devoted fan, I’d like to clarify that while Spider-Man 3 isn’t officially part of the Venom series, it does delve into the symbiote storyline. If you’re yearning for a comprehensive symbiote experience before diving into the Tom Hardy films, giving Spider-Man 3 a watch might just be what you need!
Watching Venom (2018) first, without prior knowledge of Spider-Man 3, gives you an opportunity to witness the unique approach the original Spider-Man series took in handling its alien antagonist. However, be warned, it’s not a particularly successful portrayal.
Actually, the rather weak and overly dramatic portrayal of Venom and Eddie Brock (by Topher Grace) in Spider-Man 3 could potentially make you admire the newer Venom films a bit more.
Spider-Man 3 is currently available to stream on Disney Plus.
Where to watch
Currently, you can stream the initial two installments of the Venom series on Disney Plus. However, if you want to catch “The Last Dance,” which is set for release on October 25, 2024, you’ll need to visit a theater to watch it.
It’s likely that when Venom 3 is eventually made available for streaming, it will join its predecessors on Disney Plus.
If you don’t subscribe to Disney Plus, you can acquire or lease the initial two films on various digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ for around $3.89. Following its cinematic release, Venom 3 is expected to become available for purchase or rental, with a likely availability before the year’s end.
Venom: The Last Dance is in theaters on October 25, 2024.
