Alien: Romulus Will Release On VHS, Something No Major Studio Has Done In 18 Years

As a seasoned gamer and collector of rare artifacts from the golden age of cinema, I must admit that the announcement of Alien: Romulus hitting VHS has sent a shockwave through my nostalgia-filled heart. It’s been eons since I last saw a new release on this classic format, and it feels like stepping back into the past.

It seems like it’s been 18 years since a major studio has put out a film on VHS, but that long wait will finally end when Alien: Romulus is released for the old-fashioned format on December 3. That’s correct! A physical VHS tape of the sci-fi horror movie is indeed being produced, although it will be a limited edition.

At Beyond Fest over the weekend, it was announced through the authentic Alien account on X that Fede Álvarez, writer and director of Alien: Romulus, unveiled a unique VHS release for the film. The artwork for the cassette is designed by Matt Ferguson, with both the VHS and Blu-ray versions set to hit stores simultaneously. As per Inverse, the last significant studio VHS release was A History of Violence in 2006. The upcoming Alien: Romulus VHS launch is being spearheaded by 20th Century Studios, now under the ownership of Disney.

Writer and director Fede Álvarez has revealed that a special, collector’s edition VHS tape of the film #AlienRomulus will be available for purchase on December 3 at the Beyond Fest event. The artwork for this limited release was created by @Cakes_Comics.

There seems to be some discussion about whether A History of Violence was the final major VHS release. Some suggest that Eragon from the same century, released in 2007, or Disney’s Cars VHS could potentially qualify, but both of these distributions were likely more restricted compared to A History of Violence.

In August, the movie titled “Alien: Romulus” debuted and soon found itself as the third-highest earning film within its sci-fi series. The picture eventually secured the second position for the franchise at global box offices by accumulating more than $350 million in revenue, according to BoxOfficeMojo. Notably, “Prometheus” leads the franchise with over $403 million in worldwide earnings.
