‘The Last Kingdom’s’ David Dawson Headlines International Cast of Dystopian Drama ‘The Flaw,’ With Shooting Underway in Greece (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for dystopian thrillers and a deep appreciation for literature that resonates with contemporary issues, I am eagerly anticipating “The Flaw.” The star-studded international cast, led by David Dawson, is an exciting prospect, and the fact that it’s the feature directorial debut of Theophilos Papastylianos adds a layer of intrigue.

David Dawson, who played roles in ‘The Last Kingdom’ and ‘My Policeman,’ is spearheading an impressive ensemble cast in ‘The Flaw,’ a dystopian thriller directed by Theophilos Papastylianos for his first feature film. Filming is underway in Athens at present.

Dawson will be accompanied by British actors Arthur McBain (known for “Napoleon” and “Interview with the Vampire”), Ralf Little (“The Royle Family” and “Death in Paradise”), and Danny John-Jules (“Red Dwarf” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”). Additionally, Greek theater veteran Angela Brouskou has joined the cast in a prominent role.

In a world ruled by oppressive government known as The Regime, “The Flaw” unfolds the story of a relentless Investigator (Dawson), tasked by the Elite Forces to implement a meticulous Strategy to confirm a Defendant’s (McBain) culpability. However, once the interrogation commences, he gradually uncovers that there is an imperfection not just in the Strategy, but also within the very foundations of The Regime itself.

First published in 1965, “The Flaw” is Antonis Samarakis’ most renowned piece, making him a prominent figure in contemporary Greek literature. Translated into over thirty languages, it was awarded France’s esteemed Grand Prix de Littérature Policière in 1970.

In the years leading up to a military coup in Greece, I came across a captivating novel that serves as a profound reflection on themes of truth, government repression, democracy, and power – all topics strikingly resonant in our contemporary world.

The film titled ‘The Flaw’ is jointly produced by Argonauts Productions, in collaboration with ERT from Greece and Mima Films from Latvia, and receives backing from the Greek Film Center, EKOME, and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia.

In this production, we have the trio of Panos Papahadzis, Lina Yannopoulou, and Theophilos Papastylianos, joined by Alise Rogule as a co-producer. Notably, the film is both written and directed by Theophilos Papastylianos himself.

I’ve just completed the first season of “House of David,” a captivating Biblical drama series that I was fortunate to work on as part of Argonauts Productions, based in Athens. This esteemed production company also collaborated with David Cronenberg on his Cannes competition entry, “Crimes of the Future.

Most recently, Dawson has been seen in the BBC drama “This Town,” a creation by Steven Knight, who also made “Peaky Blinders.” On the other hand, McBain, known for roles in Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Napoleon” and AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire,” is set to star alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and a star-studded cast in Prime Video’s U.K. Original action-comedy “Deep Cover.

John-Jules is most recognized for his roles in BBC shows such as “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps,” “The Royle Family,” and “Death in Paradise.” Additionally, he’s a familiar face on the sci-fi series “Red Dwarf” and has acted in movies like “Blade 2” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.” Meanwhile, Brouskou is well-known for directing various theater productions that span classical and modern genres. Alongside Parthenopi Bouzouri, she co-founded Athens’ Theater of the Room.

Completing the ensemble of actors for this movie are Sarah Akokhia, Georgia Small, Nathan Thomas, Mihalis Valasoglou, Matthew Sim, Ben Tavassoli, and Skyrah Archer.
