Disney+ Latin America and Caracol TV’s Comedy Series ‘Peter the Great: Greater Than Ever’ Breaks the Mold, Hits Ratings Highs

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I have rarely witnessed such a groundbreaking move in the television industry as the simultaneous airing and streaming of “Pedro el escamoso: más escamoso que nunca” on Disney+ Latin America and Colombia’s Caracol TV. This bold experiment shattering traditional distribution windows is indeed a game-changer, a testament to the evolving landscape of content consumption in today’s digital age.

For the first time ever, Disney+ Latin America and Caracol TV in Colombia broadcast and streamed a television series concurrently, breaking down traditional distribution barriers where free-to-air broadcasts usually initiate the airing, followed by online streaming on a platform.

In the follow-up to Caracol TV’s popular sitcom “Peter the Louse” titled “Peter the Great: Greater Than Ever,” the series has become Caracol TV’s most successful show in recent times, ending with a climax that garnered a 47.1% audience share and a 9.3 rating. This impressive finale outperformed its main rival, “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” which managed only a 25.1% share and a 5.0 rating.

During its 23 sixty-minute episodes, the joint production between Caracol TV and Disney+ ruled prime time, boasting an average rating of 9.3 and a viewership share of 44.2%. On average, over 6.5 million Colombians found themselves hooked on the storyline for each episode, as reported by Caracol.

Fernando Barbosa, SVP & general manager of Media Networks at The Walt Disney Company Latin America, mentioned at Mipcom that it’s quite rare to debut a property on both a Direct-to-Consumer Platform (DTC) and a Free-to-Air (FTA) network simultaneously. What makes ‘Pedro el escamoso,’ in particular, unique is its launch on Caracol TV’s Monday through Friday primetime schedule and the simultaneous release of all episodes on Disney+.

“The compositions of the FTA and DTC audiences are different though, therefore, there isn’t much risk of cannibalization, at least in Colombia.  Each territory holds its own composition and story and by no means does this hold true everywhere.  But yes, it’s the first time we do it and we chose to move forward because at the end we felt it was a win-win for both Caracol & Disney.  It worked extremely well and over-performed for both,” he told EbMaster.

The story continues as Pedro Coral, who’s been living abroad for over two decades, returns to his hometown. Upon arrival, he’s shocked to discover a world vastly different from the one he left when economic necessity drove him to the U.S. To his surprise, he learns that his son, also named Pedro Jr., has thrived and become a successful businessman. Yearning for his son’s approval and admiration, Pedro attempts to conceal his years of struggle and hardship by spinning tales. However, these deceptions start to unravel when he lands a job as a courier at the same corporation where his son is a vice president.

Lisette Osorio, Vice President of Business Affairs at Caracol TV, stated that ‘Pedro el Escamoso’ has captivated numerous generations for decades. Thirty years later, it resurfaces with a fresh narrative, resonating with modern audiences and various platforms. With the support of Disney, we were able to convert this tale into a multi-screen triumph, transcending regional boundaries and sparking a global dialogue,” she said.

According to Barbosa, they assessed their audience on Disney+ by focusing on several crucial metrics, including total hours watched, viewer reach, initial plays, and completion rates, to name a few.

Pedro el escamoso” premiered on Disney+ in various regions such as Latin America, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, the Balkans, Andorra, Spain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, and even Hulu in the United States. Additionally, it was shared with Free-to-Air networks throughout Latin America.

I had the pleasure of catching this show when it debuted on Univision, our trusted U.S. Hispanic network, and also streamed on their UnivisionTelevisa ViX platform last September. It was an engaging viewing experience!

Barbosa mentioned that they started experimenting with local productions in Latin America, where they were pioneers. Their very first co-productions, which go back 23 years, were with Caracol TV. Together, they produced three telenovelas: ‘La Baby Sister,’ ‘Amor A Mil,’ and ‘Siete Veces Amada.’

He expressed his excitement about continuing to collaborate with Caracol TV on more seasons of ‘Pedro el escamoso.’ He also mentioned that there may be other projects in the works. Moreover, he was pleased with how well ‘Pedro el escamoso’ traveled on Disney+. In fact, it was streamed extensively not just in Colombia, but across various regions in Latin America, making it a regional success – something quite difficult to achieve these days.

Since both Caracol TV and Disney possess robust distribution networks, they are jointly disseminating the property. In simpler terms, “We’re partnering to distribute Pedro globally,” Barbosa explained, implying that they equally share the responsibilities and profits of this venture.
