As a film enthusiast with a penchant for international comedy formats and a soft spot for hidden camera shows, I find the French spinoff of “LOL: Last One Laughing,” titled “LOL In Real Life,” utterly intriguing. The concept of taking celebrities out of their comfort zone and into the public eye, all while capturing their antics with hidden cameras, is a recipe for hilarious and unpredictable situations.
The popular comedy format ‘Last Laughing, I Can’t Stop Laughing,’ which has been successfully adapted in more than 20 regions on Amazon Prime, is about to get a daring French remake featuring covert cameras.
In contrast to the original setup where well-known comedians are confined within a house, competing to amuse each other and maintain composure, “LOL In Real Life” intends to place six celebrity contestants in various public settings across France, among unaware individuals who aren’t part of the game. The cameras will capture all their interactions discreetly.
As a fan, I’m thrilled about the spinoff Thomas Dubois, the head of Amazon MGM Studios in France, has orchestrated! This unique show demands that six famous faces make people laugh left and right, whether it’s their fellow competitors or even strangers. Each chuckle earns a point. After a 6-hour battle, the two celebrities amassing the highest points will secure a spot in the final round.
Renowned actor and producer Philippe Lacheau (“Alibi”), best known for his work on the successful French series “LOL: Tu ris, Tu perds,” which is a local adaptation of “Laughing Out Loud,” will also take the helm as host for “LOL In Real Life.” The show is being produced by Endemol France.
Laugh Out Loud” (LOL) is a reworking of the original Japanese show “Hitoshi Matsumoto Presents Documental,” which was produced by Yoshimoto Kogyo. Apart from France, Amazon has introduced localized versions in approximately 20 countries, such as Mexico, where it’s hosted by Eugenio Derbez, and Australia, with Rebel Wilson serving as the host.
“LOL In Real Life” will roll out exclusively on Prime Video in 240 territories worldwide in 2025.
Next year, the fifth season of “LOL: Who’s Laughing, Leaves” will debut, featuring an engaging French cast such as Artus, the star actor and filmmaker of this year’s top-grossing French film, “A Little Something Extra”; MMA champion Cédric Doumbe, along with actors Camille Chamoux, Vincent Dedienne, Fatou Kaba, Alexandre Kominek, Jérôme Niel, Muriel Robin, Marina Rollman, and Fred Testot. The team behind the scenes at Amazon Studios previously expanded “LOL: Who’s Laughing, I’m Outta Here!” with a Halloween special, which was released last autumn.
Today’s (October 21st) panel session at the beginning of the TV market Mipcom in Cannes is centered around “Laughing Out Loud”, featuring James Farrell, International Originals Head at Amazon MGM Studios, Akihiko Okamoto, President and Representative Director at Yoshimoto Kogyo, Thomas Dubois, France Head at Amazon MGM Studios, and Nicole Morganti, Head of Originals for Southern Europe at Amazon MGM Studios.
