Despite the sudden departure of Joaquin Phoenix from his upcoming film project, Ramirez maintains an unwavering spirit that is truly commendable. I was all set to share the screen with Joaquin Phoenix in an upcoming romantic film directed by Todd Haynes, a project that happened to focus on gay relationships. Unfortunately, five days prior to our start date in Guadalajara, Mexico, Joaquin had to step away from the production, leaving us both and the crew with a sudden change of plans.
Ramirez expressed his disappointment [to Marc Malkin from EbMaster] at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday night,” he said, “but also found motivation from it. He stated that this experience has given him even more reasons to continue moving forward and staying focused on his path, knowing he’s working in the right way. So, he’s excited about where he’s heading.
Following August’s announcement about Phoenix departing from the project, insiders informed EbMaster that the film, heavily reliant on Phoenix’s role, was at risk. The movie was a planned NC-17 rated 1930s detective drama set in a period piece, focusing on a love story between two men who escape to Mexico.
Ramirez stated that it was quite a challenging scenario they found themselves in. The auditioning phase was lengthy, and what he gained from it all was essentially the creative affirmation of presenting an antithesis to [Phoenix] during their chemistry test.
As a die-hard film fan, I was thrilled when asked about the status of the project with director Haynes. When queried about it, Ramirez shared that the latest word he’s heard is “hopefully” things will move forward – fingers crossed!
It appears that Phoenix worked on the script alongside Haynes and Jon Raymond, however, as per a reliable source within the project, the actor ended up feeling apprehensive or uncertain about it.
As a passionate movie buff, I was eagerly anticipating the film co-produced by Killer Films and distributed by M2K Film, with international distribution deals already secured before production even began. Unfortunately, just when everything seemed set, Phoenix decided to withdraw at the last minute. To make matters worse, elaborate sets had already been constructed in Guadalajara. Later reports in August by EbMaster revealed potential losses that could soar into seven figures.
