‘Don’t Be a Dick’ About Concord Coming to TV

As a longtime video game enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous titles, I find it heartwarming to see that even a game like Concord, which had a short and tumultuous lifespan, will live on through the upcoming anthology series Secret Level. The creators’ decision to include an episode based on Concord speaks volumes about their empathy for developers who pour their hearts into creating games, only to see them struggle in the market.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game called “Concord“, that’s alright because it’s no longer playable. This costly PlayStation title was withdrawn just two weeks after its release on August 23. In comparison, the movie “The Substance” has been playing in cinemas for a longer period than “Concord” was accessible online. However, this controversial game is receiving a bit of a revival as it will feature an episode in the upcoming video game anthology series called “Secret Level“, set to debut on December 10 on Prime Video.

At New York Comic Con on October 19, attendees were treated to sneak peeks of the upcoming animated series titled “Secret Level”. This preview featured brief animations inspired by games such as Pac-Man, Armored Core, Sifu, Unreal Tournament, and tabletop games like Warhammer 40,000 and Dungeons & Dragons. Notable voice actors in the project include Keanu Reeves, Kevin Hart, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Gabriel Luna. During a subsequent question-and-answer session with Tim Miller, creator of “Secret Level” (also director of Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate) and executive producer/supervising director Dave Wilson from Blur Studios, an audience member inquired why the show still plans to include an episode focusing on Concord.

“Don’t be a dick,” Miller joked at first.

We began working on these projects three years ago, which means there are some games we planned to release but ended up not being able to, due to various factors.” He added, “All creative endeavors carry an innate risk.

The science fiction multiplayer shooter game titled “Concord,” created by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony, was intended to be a significant intellectual property (IP) for the PlayStation brand. It’s reported that the production cost of this game reached an astonishing $400 million, although some gaming journalists have questioned this figure. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and underperforming commercially – with sales estimated at only 25,000 units across Steam and PlayStation Store – Sony decided to abruptly shut it down on September 3, a mere two weeks after its release.

Miller expressed empathy towards the creators of “Concord”, stating, “It’s tough when you release something, hoping people will appreciate it. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t.” In a quiet voice, he also mentioned his controversial Terminator sequel, “Terminator: Dark Fate”.

He replied, “I don’t foresee any objections to including it in the performance.” He expressed his wish, “I truly hope the match gets another opportunity to shine.” He also chose not to discuss the reasons behind its failure or whether it was correct or incorrect. All he knows is that those involved aimed to create a great game and they did their utmost best.
