As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for the twisted world of American McGee’s Alice, I can’t help but express my heartfelt gratitude to the team behind VorpalFix. It’s like finding a long-lost friend, polished and improved, yet still retaining that familiar charm.
In 2011, Electronic Arts launched the Complete edition of Alice: Madness Returns, which included an enhanced version of the original game, American McGee’s Alice from 2000. However, this wasn’t just a simple update; it was more like a full-fledged remaster. Unfortunately, this project had two significant flaws: firstly, it lacked in technical finesse, and secondly, the only way to buy the Complete edition now is through third-party retailers who sell keys. Electronic Arts has yet to address this issue. Fortunately, the technical shortcomings have been addressed with the VorpalFix modification.
This fan project fixes virtually all the shortcomings of the game.
- Most technical bugs have been fixed.
- Many elements, such as cut scenes, interface or menus were ugly stretched when playing in widescreen resolutions. With the mod, this is no longer a problem
- Support for custom resolutions and the v-syns function were also added.
- It now possible to run the game without Alice: Madness Returns.
- If someone does not like the remastered character models, the mod offers an option to disable them.
- The mod forces the models to always be displayed in the highest quality (before, the LOD system made it so that when the characters were a little further away, their simplified versions were shown).
- You can also freely set the target fps, as well as configure the FOV (field of view width).
To sum it up, VorpalFix enhances the remaster significantly by addressing nearly all its flaws, enabling us to savor the game fully. It’d be fantastic if Electronic Arts decided to re-release it officially rather than having players hunt for Complete edition keys in unauthorized retailers.
