What Does Creature Commandos Tell Us About the James Gunn DCU?

As a lifelong cinephile who has seen more superhero movies than I care to admit, the upcoming DC animated series “Creature Commandos” has piqued my interest like never before. With a unique blend of monsters, action, and humor, it’s a refreshing departure from the typical caped crusader fare that often dominates the genre.

When granted authority over the DC Universe, James Gunn, the latest boss, has chosen to kick off with the animated series titled “Creature Commandos”. You might wonder, “Creature who?” The series, set to debut on Max on December 5, is an adult-oriented animation inspired by a relatively unknown superhero team from DC Comics. During New York Comic Con 2024 on its second day, James Gunn and the show’s cast appeared on stage, discussing why “Creature Commandos”, of all things, marks the start of the “new” DCU and hinting at potential glimpses into the DCU’s upcoming direction.

Initially, Gunn chose to start working on this new show out of his own initiative, following the success of his previous DC series titled “Peacemaker.” As he shared, after “Peacemaker” achieved great success, he had a conversation with Max about creating an animated series. The discussion then led to Peter Girardi at WB Animation. Gunn was fascinated by the Creature Commandos, and his passion for monsters, particularly Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, made him feel this project was ideal. He penned the scripts even before securing a deal, and luckily, he landed the position as the head of DC Studios. With gratitude towards himself, he approved the show’s production.

At the panel event, a sensational two-minute sneak peek of Creature Commandos was unveiled, sparking immense excitement among the attendees. Boasting vibrant artwork and animation with deep, striking colors, the trailer showcases each member of the Creature Commandos: Eric Frankenstein voiced by David Harbour, the Bride portrayed by Indira Varma, Rick Flagg Sr. played by Frank Grillo, Dr. Phosphorus brought to life by Alan Tudyk, Nina Mazursky acted by Zoë Chao, and both G.I. Brobot and Weasel (previously seen in The Suicide Squad) voiced by Sean Gunn. The trailer highlights each character’s extraordinary monstrous skills. It also features a lot of action with bloodshed and appearances from other DC characters, including Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Gunn stated that we aim for ‘Peacemaker’ to stand out distinctly compared to how ‘Superman’ will be portrayed once it’s released. We want ‘Peacemaker’ to have its unique identity separate from ‘Superman’.

Additionally, it was verified that actors from DC will play their characters in both live-action and animated productions. For instance, Frank Grillo, who is known for playing Rick Flagg Sr., will return to the role of Rick Flagg in both the upcoming seasons of “Superman” and “Peacemaker”. (Grillo mentioned that his white hair as Rick Flagg created scheduling issues due to his work on Paramount’s “Tulsa King”.)

In conversation, Gunn mentioned upcoming projects such as “Supergirl” and “Lanterns,” assuring they would each have their unique qualities. He explained, “Our universe is interconnected, but we’re not imposing a uniform aesthetic on every project. And rest assured, ‘Creature Commandos’ stands on its own.
