‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

As a seasoned Trekkie who’s spent countless hours on the starship Enterprise and the holodeck, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has been renewed for Season 2 even before its first season debut! The fact that Tatiana Maslany, known for her exceptional talent in playing multiple roles simultaneously (just like some of our favorite Star Trek characters), is joining the cast as a guest star only adds to the anticipation.

The series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has already been given the green light for a second season on Paramount+, with the first season’s release date yet to be announced.

The announcement was made as part of the “Star Trek” Universe panel at New York Comic-Con on Saturday. It was also announced at the panel that “Orphan Black” alum Tatiana Maslany is set to appear in Season 1 of the Paramount+ series in a guest star role. The exact details of the character she will be playing are being kept under wraps.

In a surprising turn of events, Robert Picardo, known for his roles in “Star Trek,” unexpectedly joined a panel discussion and unveiled a live feed from the set of the first season of “Starfleet Academy.” During this broadcast, executive producer Alex Kurtzman broke the news to the cast that the series has been given another season.

The series narrative unfolds with a fresh group of Starfleet trainees, exploring their journey growing up at an iconic galactic locale. This series offers a glimpse into this youthful crew as they unite around a shared vision of aspiration and positivity. Guided by stern yet watchful mentors, they’ll learn what it means to be Starfleet officers while grappling with burgeoning friendships, fierce rivalries, first romances, and an adversary that endangers not just the Academy but also the Federation itself.

The lineup for this series features Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner. Earlier reports indicated that Holly Hunter would take on the role of both captain and chancellor of the academy, while Paul Giamatti was slated to portray the antagonist for the season.

Furthermore, Tig Notaro, Picardo, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman are set to return to their characters from past “Star Trek” productions in this new series. Gina Yashere, meanwhile, is slated to make multiple appearances as a recurring guest character.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau share the roles of co-showrunners and executive producers on “Starfleet Academy.” Additionally, Kurtzman takes on directing duties. Gaia Violo pens the first episode and serves as an executive producer as well. Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber are also named as executive producers. The production of this series is handled by CBS Studios in collaboration with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. The distribution rights belong to Paramount Global Content Distribution.
