‘Karate Kid: Legends’ First Footage: Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio Train New Student and Kick Some Ass at New York Comic Con

As a lifelong cinephile who grew up with the original “Karate Kid” trilogy as a staple in my VHS collection, I must say that the trailer for “Karate Kid: Legends” has me absolutely thrilled! The reunion of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan is already enough to get any 80’s kid like myself excited, but add in the fresh face of Ben Wang as Li Fong, and it’s a recipe for a nostalgic, action-packed delight.

On Friday evening at New York Comic Con, Sony debuted the initial trailer for the latest “Karate Kid” film, entitled “Karate Kid: Legends.” This upcoming movie is set to hit theaters on May 30th and brings back franchise veterans Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Additionally, it introduces a fresh character, Li Fong, portrayed by Ben Wang.

In the new season of “Cobra Kai”, Macchio resumes his role as Daniel LaRusso, a character he played originally in the 1984 “Karate Kid” movie trilogy and later reprised. Chan too returns to portray Mr. Han, a martial arts master modeled after Mr. Miyagi, who trained Jaden Smith’s Dre Parker in the 2010 “Karate Kid” remake.

The exclusive trailer was unveiled at the New York Comic Con, showcasing intense karate sequences featuring the main characters. In this new installment, Daniel LaRusso, played by Macchio, travels to Beijing where Mr. Han, portrayed by Chan, has been searching for him. Mr. Han introduces a new pupil, Li Fong, whom he mentors, similar to how Mr. Miyagi guided Daniel. Han explains this in the trailer, and it’s evident that Daniel and Han will have to work together to train Li Fong. However, the question arises as to whether their teaching methods will align.

The trailer displays numerous fight sequences taking place on the streets and within a dojo, as well as hints at a novel karate competition. One particularly noteworthy scene features Li Fong overpowering a bully in an alleyway by utilizing a fire escape ladder for a daring swing and vaulting off a wall. As the lead actor of “American Born Chinese,” Wang possesses experience with stunts, and this is evident in the trailer’s action sequences.

Following Chan and Macchio’s global casting call that attracted countless aspiring actors worldwide, Wang was selected for the part thanks to his exceptional acting skills and strong affinity for the character. Notably proficient in various martial arts styles such as karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo, and taekwondo.

In the upcoming movie, Ming-Na Wen, famed for her roles in “Mulan” and “The Joy Luck Club,” is set to play the onscreen mother of the main character. Additionally, Joshua Jackson and Sadie Stanley are confirmed cast members in this production as well.

Jonathan Entwistle, who is known for producing and directing shows like “I Am Not Okay With This” on Netflix and “The End of the F—ing World,” will be taking charge as director for a movie based on a script written by Rob Lieber, the writer behind “Peter Rabbit.” Karen Rosenfelt will oversee production.
