As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with a penchant for the undead, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat upon hearing about Netflix’s new offering, Outside. With a rich history of zombie cinema, it’s always intriguing to see how filmmakers breathe fresh life into this sub-genre.
Just released on Netflix is a chilling new horror film, “Outside”, offering a unique take on the zombie genre. Here’s a glimpse of what you can anticipate.
George Romero is often referred to as the “pioneer” or “founding father” of the zombie genre. In 1968, he revolutionized the horror genre with his film “Night of the Living Dead,” and went on to create a sequence of movies that steered the undead in intriguing and unconventional ways.
In the remake of Dawn of the Dead by Zack Snyder, his zombies moved swiftly, unlike traditional ones that are usually slow. Similarly, the “infected” in 28 Days Later and its sequel, created by Danny Boyle, were also fast-moving creatures.
But Netflix movie Outside delivers a new breed of zombie, which is born in the Philippines.

In the countryside, a family is attempting to find sanctuary from a devastating zombie epidemic by hiding out on a remote farmhouse. Yet, their hopes for safety soon prove unfounded.
“What sets ‘Outside’ apart from typical zombie movies is that the undead exhibit a small ability to talk and retain traces of their former humanity.
During a screening of the film in Manila, as reported by GMA News, the writer-director Carlo Ledesma expressed: “I wanted to give each of my zombies a little more depth by basing the last thing they say on their final memory before being bitten.
I didn’t desire these characters to simply act as emotionless creatures. Instead, I aimed for every character in the movie to retain their emotional depth and the ability to feel and react.

As for the feelings Ledesma talks about, let me say this from personal experience: That movie truly moved me to tears. I can’t recommend it enough.
