As a seasoned movie-goer and critic who’s seen more films than I care to remember, I can confidently say that the addition of Alicia Silverstone to Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming sci-fi thriller “Bugonia” is nothing short of electrifying. With her impressive resume, ranging from the timeless “Clueless” to the haunting “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” Silverstone brings an undeniable charm and depth that will no doubt elevate this already intriguing project.
Yorgos Lanthimos has enlisted Alicia Silverstone for the impressive ensemble of “Bugonia,” his forthcoming science fiction thriller featuring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in the leading roles.
Most recognized for playing Cher in “Clueless” (a role she revived during the recent Super Bowl), Silverstone notably starred in the 2017 psychological thriller directed by Lanthimos, titled “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
In his newest production, the filmmaker who was nominated for an Oscar presents a story about two individuals fixated on conspiracies. They abduct the influential head of a large corporation, believing her to be an extraterrestrial planning to annihilate Earth. The screenplay is penned by Will Tracy, a winner of an Emmy (known for “Succession” and “The Menu”), inspired by the 2003 South Korean comedy titled “Save the Green Planet.” Information about Silverstone’s character is being kept confidential.
The film ‘Bugonia’ is being created collaboratively by CJ ENM, who produced ‘Parasite’, with Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, and Square Peg. The team behind this project includes Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe from Element Pictures, along with Stone (Fruit Tree) and Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko from CJ ENM. This production is financed by both CJ ENM and Fremantle.
I’m thrilled to share that come November 7, 2025, Focus Features, the lucky winner of domestic rights from Cannes, will grace our local theaters with a stunning film release! Universal Pictures has been entrusted to spread this cinematic masterpiece worldwide, except for Korea, where CJ ENM takes charge. Can’t wait to be part of this global cinematic journey!
Silverstone most recently starred in the Netflix drama “Reptile,” which debuted at No. 1 on the streamer, and the XYZ Films dark comedy “Krazy House,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Her next film, A24’s “Y2K” — from Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter, and produced by Jonah Hill and Chris Storer — screened at SXSW and is due in theaters this December. Silverstone also starred in Imran J. Khan’s “Mustache,” which won the audience award at SXSW’s 2023 edition and she recently wrapped Justin Kelly’s “The Bird and the Bee.” Other recent projects include “Perpetrator,” “Senior Year,” “The Lodge,” “Valley Girl” and the Paramount TV series “American Woman.” In 2021, Silverstone was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for her performance in Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” series.
She is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman.
