2K Games has introduced its inaugural free-to-play live-action shooter game, titled Project Ethos. This groundbreaking project was presented through a reveal trailer and an open community playtest event, which is accessible to all interested participants.
31st Union’s creation, Project Ethos, is characterized by 2K as a game that combines the elements of third-person perspective, roguelike mechanics, and hero shooter genre. The unique selling point lies in the customizable upgrades, referred to as Evolutions, which enable players to shape each character according to their preferred gaming style.
2K revealed that each match offers the opportunity for you to adapt your playing strategy with Evolutions. These are potent, partially randomized enhancements tailored specifically for each character. You could transform a sniper into a close combat fighter or turn a support role into a lone wolf with immense power. Mold your hero on-the-fly to match your preferred playstyle.

The community playtest provides access to two modes: Trials and Gauntlet. Trials–described by 2K as the game’s “signature mode”–sees squads of up to three players teaming up to take down the competition while collecting cores. Cores are a resource that can be exchanged for Augments, which–as the name suggests–fuel players’ future Trials runs. Squads can head to the extraction point at any time during the match, but early extractions mean fewer cores, so the ultimate goal is to stay alive as long as possible and maximize the amount of cores collected prior to extraction. Players who have been downed can be picked up by teammates, and those who have been killed can be respawned at Respawn Beacons (as long as at least one squad member is still alive, of course).
In simpler terms, Gauntlet mode offers a challenging, competitive experience where teams with comparable skills square off. 2K Games refers to it as a “head-to-head tournament” format. Your heroes can improve in between battles, and the objective is to outlast all other squads. If you get eliminated, you won’t respawn during that round, but you’ll come back at the start of the next one.
2K and 31st Union advise that the most effective method to grasp Project Ethos is by experiencing it directly. At present, the game’s community playtest is active, which can be joined by watching a minimum of 30 minutes of content creators’ livestreams on Twitch. To access this playtest, players must reside in either the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, or Italy.
