As a global film enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many biopics, I must say that the ongoing saga of “The Apprentice” is nothing short of intriguing. The film’s journey through various territories, including its apparent rejection in the United Arab Emirates, adds a layer of political intrigue that is as captivating as any plot twist in a thriller.
The biographical film about Donald Trump, titled “The Apprentice,” featuring Sebastian Stan portraying the businessman and ex-U.S. president, is bypassing its intended cinema release in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, potentially due to political considerations.
Ali Abbasi’s movie, tracing Donald Trump’s ascent to fame and his apprenticeship under Roy Cohn, a prominent conservative attorney and political manipulator (portrayed by Jeremy Strong), was set to premiere in UAE cinemas on October 16th. However, Front Row Films, the distributor of “The Apprentice” in Dubai, has informed EbMaster that the release has not taken place yet. Furthermore, the film has disappeared from UAE cinema websites, which had been advertising it just a week ago.
Despite criticism over a controversial scene involving Donald Trump, “The Apprentice” has been given the green light for release in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt. The scene in question, depicting Trump’s violent actions towards his then-wife Ivana (portrayed by Maria Bakalova) and subsequent non-consensual acts, has reportedly been edited out.
Chakra stated that he hasn’t gotten an official notice yet from UAE censors declaring “The Apprentice” as banned, but the movie appears to be unofficially blocked from release. The National Media Council of UAE did not provide a response right away when contacted by EbMaster for comments.
Chakra declined to comment on the reason why the UAE seems to be taking this different stance.
During my tenure as a movie critic, I recall that during his presidency, Trump maintained cordial relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the twilight of his term, he approved a groundbreaking agreement to supply the nation with F-25 fighter jets and armed drones. However, these negotiations seemed to crumble under the new Biden administration. As per a recent Reuters report, should Trump have been reelected for a second term, the UAE was eager to revive this multi-billion dollar deal. In September, the UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan paid an official visit to the United States, where he publicly acknowledged Trump’s endeavors to fortify our strategic alliance. More recently, the UAE has faced criticism from U.S. Democrats due to its clandestine backing of paramilitary groups in Sudan.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to say that I’ve taken issue with “The Apprentice” following its lackluster performance at the U.S. box office over the weekend. I can’t help but view it as a low-budget, malicious, and politically distasteful attempt to tarnish my reputation.
In his critique, user EbMaster, also known as Owen Gleiberman, described “The Apprentice” as both sharp and biting, and further pointed out that it skillfully steers clear of taking cheap jabs.
