Global Screen Picks Up ‘The Book of Everything,’ Based on Guus Kuijer’s Autobiographical Novel (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unraveling tales that resonate deeply within the human heart, I must say, “The Book of Everything” has left me spellbound! Hailing from the Netherlands and based on Guus Kuijer’s autobiographical novel, this film is a testament to the power of imagination and the indomitable spirit of resilience.

International distribution rights for “The Book of Everything,” an adaptation of Guus Kuijer’s autobiographical novel, have been acquired by Global Screen, excluding Benelux and Latvia.

The book from the Netherlands, filled with magical realism, has been translated into a total of 15 languages across Europe and Japan. Additionally, it was transformed into a stage production in Australia.

On October 10, September Films premiered their movie in the Netherlands. The producer of this film is Jorn Bars, from KaapHollandFilm.

Nine-year-old Thomas, together with his defiant sibling and shy mom, find themselves constrained by their traditionally religious dad. To escape the heavy burden of this restrictive environment, Thomas employs his active imagination. In doing so, he discovers that true joy arises when one successfully overcomes one’s apprehensions.

In 1961, Thomas is maturing in Amsterdam. The somber aftermath of the war is gradually fading, and the trendy neighbors have acquired a television. However, life at Thomas’ household is starkly contrasting, with his father (Daan Schuurmans) firmly in control.

With a creative mind, Thomas devises an escape plan and possibly uncovers a method to challenge his father’s oppressive rule.

Bars stated: “This movie narrates an impactful tale on the subject of domestic violence, teaching us that overcoming fear brings happiness in life. It accomplishes this task brilliantly, using vivid imagery, humor, and entertainment that appeals to both young and old audiences.

Klaus Rasmussen, one of the co-leaders at Global Screen for international sales and acquisitions (theatrical), stated: “The movie ‘The Book of Everything’ captivated us with its extraordinary fusion of compelling drama and the enchanting world of a child dealing with major personal obstacles. This film resonates with audiences of all ages, inviting them on an emotional voyage.
