As a lifelong cinephile with memories of queuing up for tickets under the marquee lights, I must say that the upcoming release of “Smile 2” is music to my ears. The original film was a delightful surprise that managed to creep me out while also keeping me engaged, and I have high hopes for its sequel. Given the positive reviews it’s been receiving and the initial success of its predecessor, I believe it could easily surpass $25 million in its opening weekend.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “Smile 2,” the much-anticipated follow-up to Paramount’s chilling psychological thriller. This sequel promises to bring a ray of hope and a smile back to the faces of cinema owners who have been struggling during these challenging times.
The upcoming movie is expected to earn between $20 million and $25 million from 3,500 North American theaters during its opening weekend. This income would be comparable to the initial earnings of “Smile,” which was initially made for streaming but later moved to a theatrical release in 2022, raking in $22.6 million on its opening weekend. “Smile” went on to become a surprise hit, making $105 million domestically and $217 million globally. Given the positive reviews for “Smile 2,” box office analysts predict that the sequel’s initial ticket sales could exceed $25 million. However, insiders at Paramount are offering a more cautious prediction in the high teens, referencing horror sequels like “Don’t Breathe 2” and “It: Chapter Two” which didn’t surpass their predecessors’ opening weekend earnings. The production cost of “Smile 2” was $28 million.
2024 hasn’t been a standout year for horror films, a genre known for consistently selling out cinemas. However, in October, the most chilling event at the box office has been the underperformance of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” a film expected to be another successful comic book adaptation that would keep theaters busy during Halloween. Contrary to expectations, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster “Joker” has become a box office flop. After its ticket sales plummeted by 81% in its second weekend, predictions aren’t optimistic for the third week. This unconventional musical, with a budget of $200 million, has made $53.3 million domestically and $165.8 million globally so far. In contrast, the first “Joker” had earned $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million worldwide in just three days. It’s unlikely that the sequel will match these numbers before it leaves theaters.
In other domestic theaters, “Terrifier 3” – last week’s unexpected champion – is projected to decrease by approximately 65% from its opening earnings of $18.8 million. This would bring its weekend 2 revenues to around $6 million to $7 million. The film, which is extremely gruesome and made on a low budget, falls into the slasher genre.
Additionally, “The Wild Robot” by Universal and DreamWorks Animation is expected to maintain its strong performance this weekend. With a positive reception from critics, the family movie targets earning around $10 million in its third week, representing a notable 30% drop compared to the previous weekend. To date, “The Wild Robot” has amassed a total of $87.7 million in North America and $152 million worldwide.
Sean Baker’s award-winning film “Anora,” which has won the Palme d’Or, is set to premiere in six theaters in Los Angeles and New York City as part of a limited release. The movie, produced by Neon, offers a humorous perspective on an exotic dancer and sex worker who ends up marrying the son of a Russian oligarch. The film will gradually increase its screenings across various locations throughout the fall season.
Following the lackluster performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” at the box office, earnings for this year-to-date have fallen by 11.2% compared to the same period in 2023, and are also lagging behind 2019 by 26.4%. To boost the autumn season prior to the Thanksgiving releases of “Wicked”, “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2”, Hollywood studios and exhibitors are pinning their hopes on the upcoming films “Smile 2” and “Venom: The Last Dance” (releasing on Oct. 25th).
