Cynthia Erivo Thinks Your Edits Are Wicked Inappropriate

As a seasoned movie buff with years of experience under my belt, I find myself deeply moved by Cynthia Erivo‘s passionate stand against the disrespectful editing of her image from the Wicked poster. Her words resonate with me, not just as an artist, but as someone who understands the importance of identity and representation in our industry.

Nobody let Cynthia Erivo go on Archive of Our Own. She might stumble upon a story with the logline: “Elphaba doesn’t like to be interrupted when she’s hard at work, but Glinda has other plans,” tagged “Dom/sub.” The actress took issue with a fan-made version of the Wicked poster that more closely aligns with the original Broadway version on October 16 on her Instagram Story. “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” she posted in response to the edit, originally made by X user @midosommar. Erivo explained her intention behind the changes to the film’s poster, including the newly found eye contact, saying that “I am a real life human being, who chose to to [sic] look down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer … because, without words we communicate with our eyes.” She additionally claimed that “to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.”

In response to Erivo’s post, @midosommar, who created the edit, expressed in a tweet that his motive behind the poster was not malicious; instead, it was a quick edit he made within 10 minutes to honor the original creator. He didn’t expect it to gain as much attention as it did and removed the original post out of respect for Cynthia Erivo.

In a post on her Instagram, Erivo expressed her disapproval towards a common trend where people share images of Elphaba and Galinda together, often accompanied by the caption “Is your witch green?”, as well as an AI-generated video depicting them fighting. She stated that neither is amusing nor adorable. It leaves one curious about Erivo’s thoughts on the color-changing macaroni and cheese inspired by the musical “Wicked” now.
