Cynthia Erivo Criticizes ‘Wicked’ Poster Being Fan Edited to Hide Her Face, Calls Out ‘Is Your P—- Green?’ Memes: ‘Offensive’ and ‘It Degrades Me’

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of Broadway musical adaptations, I find myself deeply moved by Cynthia Erivo‘s heartfelt response to the “Wicked” fans’ photoshopped poster alterations.

Cynthia Erivo has voiced her concerns regarding fans of “Wicked” who manipulated one of the latest posters for the upcoming movie adaptation of the Broadway musical using Photoshop. Warner Bros. unveiled a poster for “Wicked” this month that mirrored the original Broadway design, featuring Ariana Grande’s Glinda leaning towards Erivo’s Elphaba to whisper, with just a slight adjustment in the film poster – raising Elphaba’s hat slightly to reveal Erivo’s eyes.

Fans of the musical “Wicked” on Broadway expressed their loyalty by overwhelming social media with photoshopped modifications following the release of the movie poster, adjusting Elphaba’s hat to a lower position and adding bold red lipstick to her lips so that the film promotional image would align perfectly with the original stage production. However, Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba in the Broadway version, found these changes to be upsetting.

In a post shared on her Instagram story, Erivo expressed dismay over an extremely inappropriate and offensive image similar to the AI-generated “Wicked” poster with her face covered, stating that it’s just as bad as being asked if her private parts are green. She made it clear that none of this is amusing or adorable, but instead serves to degrade both her and us as a whole.

Erivo stated, “The initial image is a sketch, but I’m a genuine person in real life. I decided to directly gaze into the camera lens as a means of communication without needing words. Our poster is a tribute, not a copy, and altering my face or concealing my eyes would be equivalent to erasing me – something that feels incredibly painful.

Beyond just the poster, Erivo pointed to a widely shared video created by AI, showing the poster transforming into a battle scene between the characters portrayed by the two stars. The actor additionally criticized the persistent “is your p– green?” memes that have been associated with the musical for a long time.

Jon M. Chu, along with Universal Pictures, is transforming the “Wicked” Broadway musical into a two-part movie, with the first installment hitting cinemas next month. This movie takes place at Shiz University in the land of Oz, where Elphaba and Glinda initially share a dorm room before developing an unexpected friendship. In addition to Erivo and Grande, the film’s ensemble also includes Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Bowen Yang.

“Wicked” opens in theaters Nov. 22 from Universal Pictures. A second film will arrive in 2025.
