Assassin’s Creed Shadows statue pulled over “insensitive” design

As a gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from groundbreaking titles to questionable decisions by developers. The recent controversy surrounding the Assassin’s Creed Shadows figure has left me both amused and disappointed.

The action figure based on the game “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” has been withdrawn due to widespread criticism for its design being deemed as “insensitive.

On October 15, 2024, Purearts, the manufacturer of the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Yasuke & Naoe figurine, publicly apologized for using imagery that was considered insensitive, following a wave of criticisms on their platform.

Recently, we unfortunately put out an inappropriate design. We value your feedback and have learned from your concerns. We sincerely apologize for any harm this may have caused. After carefully considering your input, we’ve gone back to the drafting board and are now redesigning the Qlectors Assassin’s Creed Shadows Yasuke & Naoe. Stay updated!

Despite the characters not receiving criticism, there was significant online criticism centered around a damaged torii gate. Numerous Japanese social media users commented that they had never witnessed a torii gate with only one leg, except for the one at Nagasaki’s Sanno Shrine.

This single-standing torii gate is globally recognized due to its historical significance; it was damaged during the atomic explosion in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Because of this notorious event, the current Qlectors Assassin’s Creed Shadows Yasuke & Naoe action figure has been removed from sale.

Customers need to remember that their pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed Shadows are still valid, and Purearts will be providing more information via email shortly. Yet, it’s worth mentioning that this game has faced criticism from the gaming community before.

On July 23, 2024, Ubisoft responded to concerns raised by the Japanese community about historical accuracy in their game. Many players had criticized various aspects of the game, such as its architecture, clan symbols, and seasonal depictions.

Critics have voiced concerns that the character Yasuke, a prominent figure in the game, may have been given an overly significant part in the Sengoku era by Ubisoft, potentially stretching historical truths regarding his association with Oda Nobunaga.

Ubisoft revealed that the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been postponed to February 14, 2025, in order to give a more refined finish to this installment of the series.
