As an admirer, I find myself utterly captivated by Paul Mescal’s journey in Hollywood, particularly his experiences working alongside legends like Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott in “Gladiator II.” The sheer magnitude of the film sets, as well as the intimidating presence of Washington, must have been a daunting challenge for this rising star. Yet, it seems that Mescal not only survived but thrived amidst these obstacles, demonstrating maturity, resilience, and an undeniable talent that even Washington himself acknowledges.
Landing the main part in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” meant Paul Mescal had to perform on the largest film sets he had ever encountered. The director recently revealed to GQ that his actor “came close to fainting” on his first day inside the Colosseum replica built to scale in Malta, stating that Mescal was not aware of its immense size.
However, what might have been even more daunting for Mescal than performing on the sets of “Gladiator II” was the confrontations with Denzel Washington, who plays a wealthy figure in Rome controlling a group of gladiators for entertainment. Among them is Mescal’s character, Lucius, who finds himself in this circle.
Mescal admitted to GQ magazine that he had been mentally preparing for the nerve-wracking experience of acting alongside a great like Washington. ‘Today is the day Denzel will be on set,’ he thought, feeling overwhelmed. However, the anxiety became so intense that he suddenly realized, ‘This is just ridiculous. I have a job to do.’
The publication was informed by Washington that Mescal is highly skilled on set, and his co-star is adept at what they do, understanding the process. It’s effortless to collaborate with him because he offers something valuable. There’s a subtle elegance, power, and intelligence in his presence, even when he’s just standing still.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming sequel, “Gladiator 2”. In this continuation, we find Mescal portraying an adult Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the late Maximus (Russell Crowe). The narrative unfolds with Lucius residing in the Numidian region of North Africa, a place his mother sent him to as a child, due to its distance from the Roman Empire. A series of events transports Lucius back to Rome, this time as a gladiator, leading him to forge new adversaries and reconnect with his mother.
During an interview with Empire magazine in August, Washington revealed that it was his “American Gangster” director, Scott, who enticed him to take on the role in the “Gladiator” sequel.
Only a few more films excite me enough to make, and I need to be moved by the director’s vision, as I was profoundly inspired by Ridley Scott,” Washington stated. “We had a successful collaboration initially, and here we are again. He’s eager, full of life, and passionate about his upcoming project. He serves as an inspiration. At 86, we all aspire to feel that way.
The sequel to “Gladiator” will be released in cinemas on November 22, by Paramount Pictures. To delve deeper into the cover story featuring Mescal, visit GQ’s official website for a comprehensive read.
