Xbox removes $1 Game Pass option ahead of Black Ops 6 release

As a long-time gamer with a wallet that’s seen better days, I find myself torn between two worlds amidst this Xbox Game Pass and Black Ops 6 debacle. On one hand, as a budget-conscious player, the $1 for 14 days subscription option has been my lifeline, allowing me to dip into the vast ocean of games without breaking the bank. But alas, Microsoft’s decision to pull the plug on this deal just ahead of BO6’s launch has left me feeling like a fish out of water.

With just a week left before the launch of Black Ops 6, Xbox has taken down the option to buy a 14-day Game Pass subscription for $1.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been following the buzz surrounding Xbox’s move to offer Black Ops 6 on Game Pass Ultimate at launch. However, this decision hasn’t been without its share of debate. Back in July, some Game Pass subscribers, including myself, found ourselves questioning the price increase linked to Call of Duty.

Starting from now, not only will prices increase across all subscription levels, but standard-tier users will no longer receive early access to first-party Xbox games on their release date. This goes against Microsoft’s commitment made in May 2024 that subscribers would have immediate access to every new first-party game and that the upcoming game Battlefield 6 wouldn’t be restricted by a new subscription tier.

CharlieIntel further ignited the debate by disclosing that the subscription option for Game Pass at a $1 rate for 14 days has been taken away, which is quite timely, as Call of Duty: Black Ops VI launches on October 25, 2024, only a week later.

CharlieIntel noted that, unfortunately, there’s no complimentary trial being offered at the moment. To gain access to Game Pass, users must make a full payment.

As Black Ops 6 prepares to debut next week, Microsoft has taken away the opportunity to try Xbox Game Pass at a reduced cost of $1 for two weeks. Now, the only option is a monthly subscription without a free trial.

Different spectators voiced their disapproval, yet others understood it was a commercial call that necessitated action.

“Can’t even be mad at them for this,” one user responded.

On the other side of the aisle, a second commenter argued, “Imagine being one of the richest companies on the planet already way overcharging for game pass and it still not being enough.”

This action is intended to discourage players who only intend to play BO6 from subscribing to the Game Pass. A wiser choice would be to buy the complete game for $70 instead of shelling out $20 monthly, unless you’re enjoying additional benefits that the Game Pass offers as well.

A different fan expressed, “It’s hard for me to understand why someone would spend $20 a month and an additional $30 upfront for the vault edition when they could just buy the entire game.
