Sandy Powell’s First U.S Costume Exhibition Opens at SCAD Museum in Atlanta

As I stand before Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film exhibit at SCAD’s Museum of Fashion and Film, I am utterly mesmerized by the rich tapestry of cinematic history that unfolds before my eyes. The intricacy, elegance, and sheer artistry of each costume are a testament to the boundless creativity and dedication of this remarkable woman.

An exhibition showcasing costumes from the long-spanning career of renowned costume designer Sandy Powell was recently unveiled at the Museum of Fashion and Film located within SCAD’s premises, specifically in Atlanta.

At the unveiling event, Powell – known for films such as “Orlando,” “Shakespeare in Love,” and “Far From Heaven” – shared a reflective statement. “It’s been quite an unusual experience for me,” Powell said to EbMaster. “It’s deeply emotional because I’m not merely observing the artworks. Each piece, each vignette, triggers memories of where I was in my life during those periods. It feels like I’ve just walked through a time capsule of the last four decades of my personal history.

The exhibition named “Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film” is put together by Rafael Gomes, who heads SCAD FASH museums as creative director. It features a broad spectrum of genres, eras, and contexts, highlighting Powell’s versatile work on films such as “Shakespeare in Love,” “The Favourite,” “Cinderella,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

Paula Wallace, president and founder of SCAD, stated that “Sandy Powell, a designer with 15 Academy Award nominations and three wins, has skillfully created costumes for famous films ranging from ‘Shakespeare in Love’ to ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ Sandy is well acquainted with SCAD, as she has been honored at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival and I have invited her as a guest on my series On Creativity. We are now completing our friendship by presenting Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film, which offers an ideal platform for her award-winning work in her first U.S. exhibition at SCAD.

I can’t help but be captivated by the stunning fur coat and hat, reminiscent of “Carol,” gracefully donned by the extraordinary Cate Blanchett. They undoubtedly will steal the hearts of many on display here.

As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my excitement about my first-ever retrospective exhibition at SCAD FASH Museum in Atlanta. This remarkable opportunity has allowed me to showcase my work in an institution that mirrors my passion for the art of costume design. I eagerly anticipate that this thoughtfully assembled collection will stimulate and inspire the next generation of costume designers, just as the ingenuity and creativity of the designers I’ve admired throughout my career have inspired me.

Powell is among a select group of costume designers who have retained a collection of their designs over the years. When asked about the origin of this practice, Powell shared with her audience that it dates back to her very first film, titled “Caravaggio.” She explained that during that time, she was still making the costumes herself and, at the conclusion of the production, there was some uncertainty regarding their fate. So, she decided to keep a few of them.

As Powell carried on with her work, she also kept amassing things. “When I ventured into larger productions,” she said, “I understood that I wasn’t allowed to keep them. They weren’t mine because they belonged to the ones who financed the films.” Powell confessed that she develops a bond with certain items and costumes from her bigger projects. “I even asked for permission to get some essential pieces,” she chuckled.
