James Gunn Shares First Photo Of Superman's Dog

As a die-hard Superman fan, I can’t help but feel a unique connection to the latest news about Krypto’s live-action debut. James Gunn‘s decision to base Krypto on his own troubled dog, Ozu, adds an unexpected yet charming touch to the story. It’s fascinating how life imitates art in such a profound way, with Ozu’s destructive tendencies shaping Superman’s narrative and Krypto’s character.

Since 1955, Krypto, Superman’s loyal dog, has been a constant presence in the Superman Family. This white shepherd has graced various TV shows and movies, like Smallville (renamed Shelby), HBO Max’s live-action series Titans, the animated film DC League of Super-Pets from 2022, and now, he is set to make his live-action cinematic debut in the upcoming Superman movie. Fans finally got a sneak peek when director James Gunn unveiled the first look.

As I hopped onto my social media platforms, I couldn’t help but share an incredible snap of David Corenswet, our Superman, posing with a pure-white canine companion, floating in the vastness of space and gazing at Earth’s mesmerizing rotation. In the caption, I reminisced about Krypto, revealing that the movie’s dog was inspired to some extent by my very own furry friend!

This summer, I’m thrilled to see Krypto grace our screens, as he originates from none other than our beloved canine companion, Ozu. As I delved into crafting Superman, we welcomed Ozu into our family, having been rescued from a heart-wrenching situation with 60 other dogs in a backyard. To put it mildly, Ozu was a handful! He wasted no time in causing havoc to our home, our belongings, and even took a bite out of my laptop.

Gunn would continue about how Ozu’s problems helped navigate Superman’s own narrative for the film.

It took quite some time before he allowed us to interact with him, making me ponder about how challenging life might be if Ozu possessed superpowers. This led to the introduction of Krypto into the script, significantly altering the narrative as Ozu was impacting my existence. It seemed fitting to introduce the less-than-perfect hero, Krypto, during Adopt A Shelter Dog month, Gunn remarked, as Ozu has proven to be a good boy ever since.

In theaters on July 11, 2025: The movie titled “Superman,” starring Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, and Nicholas Hoult, takes to the skies.
