As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and dog lover who has spent countless hours poring over panels and binge-watching animated adaptations, I must say that the news of Krypto the Superdog gracing our screens next year in James Gunn’s “Superman” film is nothing short of exhilarating.
Superman‘s canine best friend will be joining him onscreen next year.
In his social media post on Tuesday, James Gunn officially announced that Superdog Krypto is set to make an appearance in his forthcoming “Superman.” This revelation was made to celebrate October as Adoption Month for Shelter Dogs.
This summer, Krypto will make his appearance in Superman, a character inspired by our rescue dog named Ozu. Adopted shortly after I began writing Superman, Ozu was no ordinary pet – he had spent his life in a backyard with 60 other dogs and had never interacted with humans before. To say he was challenging would be an understatement; he wrecked our home, chewed up our shoes and furniture, and even devoured my laptop! It took a while before we could even touch him. One day, I pondered how difficult life would be if Ozu had superpowers, and that’s when Krypto entered the script and transformed the story just as Ozu was transforming my life. In honor of #AdoptAShelterDog month, it seems fitting to introduce the sometimes troublesome, yet endearing, Krypto. By the way, Ozu, who used to be quite a handful, is now often a very good boy.
In various animated DC movies, Krypto – a powerful dog hailing from Krypton, Superman’s home planet – has been a recurring character. However, he hasn’t made an appearance in any live-action films yet. That changes with James Gunn’s upcoming film, “Man of Steel,” starring David Corenswet, where Krypto will make his debut next summer. Since his first appearance in a 1955 issue of DC Comics’ “Superboy,” Krypto has been portrayed as a white dog wearing a golden collar and a cape that matches Superman’s red one. Like Superman, Krypto possesses extraordinary strength, intelligence, and enhanced senses. In the 2022 movie “DC League of Super-Pets,” Dwayne Johnson provided the voice for this canine character, with Kevin Hart voicing Batman’s dog Ace.
