As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I’ve seen games come and go, some leaving lasting memories while others fade into oblivion. XDefiant, once touted as the next big thing, now seems to be teetering on the brink of extinction.
Initially hyped as a rival that could dethrone Call of Duty and rule the gaming genre, XDefiant now appears to be nearing its end, with reports suggesting that Ubisoft intends to close the game following just four seasons.
On Twitter or X, well-known tipster Shaun Weber made a definitive statement suggesting the game is now defunct.
It appears that XDefiant, previously believed to be defunct, is undergoing further testing by Ubisoft’s research team. If they can’t attract sufficient player numbers, there are rumors suggesting the game may discontinue support after Season 4.

The tweet shares insights into Ubisoft’s internal operations, which could potentially save their struggling game. Weber explains that the research team has invited play testers for an “internal testing event” to gather more feedback. They then hint that Season 4 may be the final one if they can’t attract enough players.
As the game was about to be released, its simplified gameplay mechanics attracted many players, in contrast to the intense and intricate battle royale games like Apex Legends. At first glance, it appeared that the game had effectively tapped into this trend, as Ubisoft saw player numbers surpass 12 million.
Unfortunately, maintaining player engagement has been challenging for the game developer, leading to a decline in its popularity. Consequently, the game has slipped out of the top 10 weekly rankings on all platforms. Ubisoft has declared that they will discontinue support for the game after Season 4 if they can’t attract more players.
As we move into the game’s second season, there’s a window of opportunity to make improvements. The report from Insider Gaming in August suggested that the game needed to change its course by Season 3. So, at the minimum, this would be pushing back that deadline.
At the moment, the game’s creator is still diligently working on updates, fixing concerns raised by players as they arise. On October 8th, a new batch of improvements was released, tackling major issues related to character movement, battles, and unexpected collisions.
Following a series of notable setbacks at Ubisoft, such as the rocky development of the pirate game Skull and Bones, the team is eager to restore confidence by launching Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
