Longtime Final Fantasy Composer Says He's Done Making Video Game Music

As a long-time gamer who has grown up with the melodies of Nobuo Uematsu echoing through countless adventures, hearing the news that Fantasian: Neo Dimension will be his final video game soundtrack feels like the end of an era. From the haunting tunes of Final Fantasy 7 to the enchanting melodies of Chrono Trigger, Uematsu’s compositions have been a constant companion in my gaming life.

Prior to the launch of Fantasian: Neo Dimension on PC and gaming platforms in December, renowned video game musician Nobuo Uematsu has disclosed that this upcoming game will include his last ever soundtrack for video games. “This is my swansong as a composer of video game music,” Uematsu stated in a short video message.

A musician who taught himself, Nobuo Uematsu has a long-standing career and is renowned for his work with the Final Fantasy series. Although he had previously worked on other games, it was his musical contributions to the 1987 RPG that catapulted him to fame, leading him to create music for subsequent installments in the franchise. In addition to the Final Fantasy series, Uematsu has also contributed music to popular JRPGs such as Romancing SaGa, Chrono Trigger, and Fairy Fencer F over the years.

Final Fantasy 7 is known for its exceptional soundtrack, with Uematsu contributing new melodies inspired by his original compositions for the Remake and Rebirth instalments. With a prolific portfolio under his belt, Uematsu has also crafted soundtracks for various anime movies. In 2004, he departed from Square Enix to establish Smile Please production company, followed by Dog Ear Records in 2006. However, in 2018, Uematsu decided to take a break from the industry to prioritize his mental and physical wellbeing.

Previously, the creator of Final Fantasy and producer of Fantasian, Hironobu Sakaguchi, stated that Nobuo Uematsu’s work on the RPG’s soundtrack might be his last, due to health problems. As quoted in Mobile Syrup in 2021, Sakaguchi said, “Prior to our collaboration with him for Fantasian, Uematsu was dealing with some health difficulties, and there were doubts about whether he could compose the entire soundtrack or even work on it at all. However, Uematsu persevered and ended up composing the game’s complete 60-piece orchestrated soundtrack.

After that, Uematsu has been responsible for creating the primary themes for Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Starting December 5, Fantasian: Neo Dimension – originally divided into two parts on mobile devices – will be available for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch.
