Venom: The Last Dance Director Hints At A Future Beyond Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock

As a die-hard Marvel and Venom fan who has been following this saga since the comics, I must say I’m thrilled about the upcoming Venom: The Last Dance! Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but knowing that Sony isn’t letting go of their Symbiote saga is music to my ears.

Sony has not held back in advertising Venom: The Last Dance as Tom Hardy’s last portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom. However, it doesn’t imply that Sony will no longer be associated with Venom or his main enemy, Knull, the Symbiote God, once this film is over.

In a conversation with IGN, Kelly Marcel, who wrote the first two Venom films and directed and wrote The Last Dance, revealed that Tom Hardy’s departure was part of the original plan. This won’t affect Sony’s intention to introduce Rhys Ifans’ character, Knull, over multiple movies.

According to Marcel, our plan from the start was to tell the Eddie/Venom saga in three acts, with the third film serving as the climax for reasons that will be revealed on screen. As fans know, there’s a vast array of symbiote tales yet to be told, and one movie wouldn’t do justice to Knull. After this trilogy, there are more stories to delve into – hinting at a bigger narrative unfolding: “God is coming.

In the works of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman, Knull is famously recognized as the King in Black and the originator of symbiotes. This formidable cosmic adversary managed to overpower many powerful Marvel characters before being subdued. However, Marcel didn’t provide details about her future plans for Knull, but she did clarify why Ifans was chosen for this role after he had previously portrayed Curt Connors/The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Marcel mentioned that it’s quite usual for actors to portray diverse Marvel characters in multiple films, and this rule applies to Rhys as well. The most suitable actors were selected for their roles, with Rhys being no exception; he takes on a fresh and unique character in an engaging and significant part. I can hardly wait to see the audience’s reaction to his outstanding performance!

Marcel also shared some minor spoilers about Knull’s role in the movie.

Marcel stated, “We’re well aware of how significant Knull is to fans, similar to how we set up Venom in the past. Our aim is to establish a strong base for Knull as well. The character ‘The King in Black’ is far too powerful not to be explored further. In this film, Knull makes an appearance, but it’s merely the start of his tale. Marvel’s most formidable villains have been developed gradually. Here, Knull serves as the menacing force lurking behind the danger that pushes Eddie and Venom’s partnership to its limits, yet it’s their bond that forms the core of this narrative.

Venom: The Last Dance will hit theaters on October 25.
