Joker: Folie à Deux Drops 81% In Second Weekend At The U.S. Box Office

As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say I am quite taken aback by the swift and unexpected turn of events in the box office realm this past weekend. The clownish antics of Terrifier 3 have proved to be too enticing for audiences, dethroning Joker: Folie à Deux from its coveted No.1 spot after just a single weekend.

Prior to October, it would have seemed implausible that Joker: Folie à Deux would lose its No. 1 spot after just a weekend to another horror clown movie like Terrifier 3. However, this is exactly what transpired as Terrifier 3 took the lead in U.S. box office earnings with $18.3 million during its opening weekend (as reported by Deadline). In contrast, Joker’s sequel slipped to third place behind The Wild Robot, which earned $13.45 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $83.7 million so far.

Initially, there were indications that Folie à Deux might struggle at the box office, as it made a lackluster debut of $37.7 million compared to Joker’s impressive opening weekend haul of $96.2 million in 2019. In its second week, Joker: Folie à Deux saw an alarming drop of 81%, earning just $7.055 million. To clarify, this is the steepest decline for any DC superhero-inspired film to date. Interestingly, only two other DC movies have fared worse in their second weeks: Wonder Woman 1984 with $5.4 million in 2020 (when cinemas were largely closed due to the pandemic), and Jonah Hex, which managed a meager $1.6 million during its second weekend in 2010.

For Folie à Deux, the outlook remains bleak as international earnings are considered. According to Deadline’s report, Joker: Folie à Deux earned $22.7 million from 77 countries last weekend, bringing its international earnings to $113.7 million. When combined with its domestic total of $51.6 million, the film’s global revenue stands at $165.3 million, significantly less than its production budget of $200 million, excluding advertising costs. Moreover, it’s essential to note that studios typically retain only half of their films’ box office earnings, with the rest going to cinema owners. Given these circumstances, this sequel appears unlikely to turn a profit and may end up losing a substantial amount for the studio.

Warner Bros. has a piece of positive news to share: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice placed fourth in the box office, amassing an additional $7.05 million to its domestic total of $275.6 million. This is currently the most successful film of the fall season so far. However, these earnings won’t be sufficient to make up for the losses from Joker 2. Given Folie à Deux’s current downward trend, it might not even rank in the top 10 by its fourth week in theaters. In the interim, the Joker sequel is expected to settle in the lower half of the top 10 next weekend.
