Maori Dialog Favored in Warner Bros’ New Zealand Series ‘Tangata Pai’

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema, I find myself genuinely intrigued by the upcoming production, “Tangata Pai.” The fact that it’s the first primetime series to feature 30% dialog in the Maori language is a bold and commendable step towards cultural preservation and inclusivity.

Filming has started for “Tangata Pai,” a drama supported by Warner Bros. Discovery, marking it as the first prime-time series where approximately one third of the dialogue is delivered in the Maori language.

An eight-episode drama unfolds, weaving together the lives of five individuals whose paths cross following an explosion at a tranquil indigenous protest against mining operations at a sacred location. Once concluded, this production will air on New Zealand‘s TV3 and TV3+ networks.

The television series was developed by multi-talented creator Kiel McNaughton, known for his work on “Good Grief” (AMC), “Waru,” “Vai,” and “Kāinga,” as well as “The Legend of Baron To’a” and “Princess of Chaos.” Not only is he the writer and director for this show, but he also oversees its production as the showrunner.

The film “Tangata Pai” is created by Kerry Warkia, who also brought us “Good Grief,” “Waru,” “Vai,” and “Kāinga.” This production falls under the banner of Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions, a company that she founded alongside McNaughton. The screenplay for this movie was collaboratively written by McNaughton, Mei-Lin Te Puea Hansen (from works like “Giving up the Ghost” and “Kāinga”), Briar Grace Smith (“Fishskin Suit,” “The Price of Water,” “Cousins”) and Hamish Bennett (“Bellbird,” “Uproar”).

The series was collaboratively produced by Ngāti Te Whiti and Te Atiawa, local indigenous groups from New Plymouth and Taranaki, alongside a team of tribal advisors. It received backing from Te Mangai Paho, a Maori broadcasting organization, as well as NZ On Air.

The main actors in “Tangata Pai” include Nicola Kāwana (known for “One Lane Bridge,” “My Life is Murder”), Shavaughn Ruakere (“The Legend of Baron To’a,” “Power Rangers Cosmic Fury”), Jayden Daniels (“Head High,” “Whina”), Ariāna Osborne (“Madam,” “Millie Lies Low”) and Yoson An (“Mulan,” “New Gold Mountain”).

The production is scheduled to last for about six weeks, starting from October and going through November. Filming will occur in both New Plymouth (Ngāmotu) and Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau).

Warner Bros. Discovery’s premier series is a testament to daring, creative narratives, as it highlights the vibrant diversity and tenacious spirit of Aotearoa. ‘Tangata Pai’, in reflecting our desire for captivating, homegrown content, embodies our vision,” stated Matt Barthow, senior director of content ANZ at Warner Bros. Discovery.

McNaughton’s invention of “Tangata Pai” earned him a spot in the debut writers’ workshop program organized by the US-based Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE).
