French Executive Romain Bessi Joins Producers Alliance the Creatives as CEO, With Mandate to Form Innovative Indie Studio (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the captivating world of cinema, I find the appointment of Romain Bessi as CEO of The Creatives to be an exhilarating development. His extensive experience in building powerhouse studios like Newen Studios and StudioCanal is undoubtedly a testament to his visionary leadership and strategic acumen.

French media executive Romain Bessi, a significant figure behind the growth of France’s Newen Studios and StudioCanal into global powerhouses, is stepping into the independent film sector as the chief executive officer of an alliance of indie production companies called The Creatives, in this newly established position.

Previously serving as CEO at Newen Studios, Bessi has been assigned the task by the collective group of nine companies known as The Creatives, to establish a distinctive integrated structure for their alliance and initiate an initial funding round for a fresh type of studio, which will be collectively owned by its producers. (According to a statement)

The following companies make up the group of Creatives: Haut Et Court (from France), Lemming Film (Netherlands), Maipo Film (Norway), Razor Film (Germany), Spiro (Israel); Unité (France), Good Chaos (U.K.), Masha (U.S.) and Komplizen Film (Germany) as well.

These well-known independent studios, active across eight nations, have produced approximately 330 films, ranging from “The Lobster” to “Quo Vadis, Aida?”, the post-Bataclan attack drama “You Will Not Have My Hate,” and Sandhya Suri’s “Santosh,” which represents the U.K.’s entry in this year’s international feature film category for the Oscars. In terms of television, they have created over 50 series such as “The New Pope” and Clive Owen’s crime drama “Monsieur Spade.

In 2021, the participating companies formed a lasting alliance, known as The Creatives, for the purpose of collaborating on co-productions, strategic joint ventures, information exchange, and network integration. According to their official declaration, this partnership was established upon common strengths such as cultural appreciation, mutual respect, diversity, and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Bessi explained to EbMaster, “Their partnership is naturally strong since they’ve collaborated for five years. They’ve produced several works together, have mutual respect, and trust one another deeply. This means all the advantages a team could offer are already present, allowing us to build on that strength.

Bessi expressed, “After nearly three decades in the field, I find this move to be the most fitting progression in my career, and undeniably the most thrilling. The entities within Creatives Studios are truly exceptional within our industry, and collectively they offer unprecedented creative and business prowess. Joining this collective will only amplify these strengths.

Romain’s dedication to The Creatives Studio sends a powerful message from the market, we are thrilled to collaborate and create a one-of-a-kind workspace with his expertise and insight into our shared initiative,” stated Carole Scotta, CEO of Haut Et Court and founder of The Creatives Studios, in her statement.

Jonas Dornbach, CEO and partner of Germany’s Komplizen, expressed excitement about Romain Bessi joining us as CEO. Bessi’s approach to integrating growth and diversity in the entertainment industry isn’t just a tactic; it’s about redefining what can be achieved. With his guidance, we are prepared to break new ground and elevate The Creatives to greater heights.

Bessi plans to attend a panel discussion with his colleagues from The Creatives, on Tuesday at Rome’s MIA Market. This gathering will focus on the future of their alliance, which represents an innovative independent business model that is increasingly important for producers in light of the challenges posed by global market forces.
