Jennifer Grey Is Waiting for ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel to Be Nailed Down: ‘It Has to Be Right’

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I eagerly await the arrival of the “Dirty Dancing” sequel. Four years is an eternity in movie-making time, but as someone who cherishes the original 1987 classic, I understand that perfection takes patience.

Four years have passed since it was revealed that a “Dirty Dancing” sequel was in the works, with Jennifer Grey returning as Frances “Baby” Houseman, her character from the 1987 film. The new movie was initially planned for release in 2024, but Lionsgate delayed its cinema premiere due to the Hollywood strikes that took place last year.

More recently, Grey discussed the delayed “Dirty Dancing” sequel during the premiere of her new movie, “A Real Pain,” at the BFI London Film Festival.

Grey stated during the ‘A Real Pain’ premiere in London, that he can’t reveal many details about ‘Dirty Dancing’, because he doesn’t want to make any promises. He’s just keeping his fingers crossed that they get it exactly right.

Grey mentioned to the journalists that they could set that matter aside for now, suggesting that they might discuss it in more detail during their next conversation, when he hoped that everything would have been resolved.

2020 saw Lionsgate revealing plans for a fresh “Dirty Dancing” chapter, with Grey set to star and produce. The sequel’s director, Jonathan Levine, who has previously worked on films such as “Long Shot,” “Warm Bodies,” and “50/50,” is at the helm.

Although ‘Dirty Dancing’ has always been one of my favorite movies, I never thought I’d be directing its sequel,” Levine expressed in a statement back in May 2022. Co-writing it, I found myself enamored with both the old and new characters, the atmosphere of ’90s Catskills New York, and the music that spans from tunes from the original film to ’90s hip-hop. I’m eager to team up with Jennifer to share this captivating tale of summer, romance, and dance with a fresh batch of fans. And for those longtime admirers, I assure you we won’t tarnish your childhood memories. We will approach the task with maturity, drive, and, most importantly, affection.

1963 finds us at a Catskills resort, where the story of “Dirty Dancing” unfolds around Frances “Baby” Houseman (Grey), who develops affection for Johnny Castle, the dance instructor (Patrick Swayze). As of 2022, it has been reported by EbMaster that the creators are discussing potential ways to include the late actor’s influence in the upcoming sequel.
