Anchor Bay Picks Up Comedy ‘Sour Party’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned moviegoer with years of experiencing watching films from various genres and eras, I must say that the upcoming comedy “Sour Party” has piqued my interest significantly. The fact that it is a semi-autobiographical work from the talented duo Amanda and Michael Drexton, who also happen to be married, adds an intriguing layer of authenticity to the narrative.

Among other entertainment acquisitions, Anchor Bay Entertainment now holds worldwide distribution rights for the film ‘Sour Party,’ a comedy penned, directed, and produced by married couple Amanda and Michael Drexton. In their own words, this project serves as a bittersweet tribute to Los Angeles, exploring the darker aspects of self-absorption in two struggling 30-somethings.

The movie features Samantha Westervelt, also one of its co-writers, joined by actors like Reggie Watts from “Pitch Perfect 2”, Corey Feldman known for “Stand By Me”, Augie Duke of “Mayans M.C.”, and others. The plot centers around two financially struggling women in their thirties, Gwen (played by Westervelt) and Amanda, who attempt to gather funds from struggling artists on the verge of failure. Their goal is to accumulate enough money to purchase a costly gift for a baby shower organized for Gwen’s sister. According to the Drextons, it offers a fresh, feminist perspective on the usual, male-dominated buddy comedy genre.

Upon our initial viewing of ‘Sour Party,’ we were utterly impressed by its unique angle,” expressed Zambeck. “The Drextons have crafted a hilarious and relatable farce that’s both intelligent and satirical. We’re excited to share this film with viewers and consider it another timeless addition to the extensive collection of unconventional comedies.

The movie was overseen as an executive producer and shot by cinematographer Steven Moreno, who is recognized for his work on “Better Off Zed” and “Panic.

Originally premiered at the Sydney Underground Festival in 2023, “Sour Party” later went on to secure the 2023 Audience Award for Best Feature at the Chattanooga Film Festival.

The rejuvenated Anchor Bay, now under the ownership of Starz Distribution’s founders, Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz, was acquired through negotiations they conducted on behalf of the filmmakers regarding the Anchor Bay Entertainment deal.
