Joe Locke Became Wiccan in ‘Agatha All Along’ by Using Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Movement Coach: ‘The Way They Use Their Magic’ Is Similar

As a movie reviewer with a background in British theatre and a deep love for Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that Joe Locke’s performance as Billy/Wiccan in “Agatha All Along” is nothing short of spectacular. The fifth episode, titled “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, culminating in the much-anticipated reveal that Billy is indeed Wanda Maximoff’s son.

After the fifth episode of “Agatha All Along” was released on Disney+, Joe Locke could finally take a deep breath. This is because the episode, named “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” concludes with the much-anticipated disclosure that Locke’s character Teen is actually Billy, the son of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and also the teenage superhero Wiccan. While fans had predicted the twist, it still packed a punch, as a crown resembling the Scarlet Witch appeared on Billy’s head.

Locke shared with Entertainment Weekly how wonderful it feels now that the major secret has been revealed. He also mentioned he consumed four doses of melatonin the previous night, just to relax himself and get some rest before the episode was released.

In the heart of London, I found myself tossing and turning at 2 a.m., unable to catch some shut-eye. Knowing this was the perfect moment to indulge in a little self-medication, I succumbed, only to be rudely awakened by my phone buzzing incessantly. The clandestine project I’d been carefully nurturing and safeguarding with unwavering diligence was now floating freely, out there for the world to see.

Locke’s character Billy/Wiccan unexpectedly showed a sinister side, employing his powers to entomb Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone), and Jennifer Hale (Sasheer Zamata) within a deep, rapidly filling mud pit.

Locke commented on the show’s twist about Billy being a witch too, which alters the narrative. He was previously seen as ordinary among the witches, but now we realize he’s not only one of them, but potentially the most powerful, given his ability to harm them. This newfound power shifts him into the dominant role on the Road. How will this affect the group dynamics and the future of their relationships?

By the finale of episode 5, it remains unclear about the fate of those witches, yet his actions are questionable. The actor further discussed the complexity of his character, exploring whether he is good or bad. This brings to mind the nurturing figures in his life. Wanda performs wicked deeds but may not be inherently evil. Agatha, on the other hand, seems clearly villainous, though there’s more to her story. We know that he has been deceiving Agatha, and we delve into the intricacies of his manipulative nature. The persona he presents as a fanboy teen might be entirely fake, or perhaps it still holds some truth. These aspects made playing him fascinating for me.

Since Billy is Wanda’s son and they possess similar superpowers, Locke found it crucial to analyze Olsen’s actions as the Scarlet Witch. The primary method to accomplish this objective was collaborating with Jennifer White, who served as Olsen’s movement coach and played a pivotal role in designing the gestures used for the Scarlet Witch’s powers.

Locke explained to Entertainment Weekly that our team focused on identifying commonalities between Billy and Wanda in their magical abilities. Since fans of the comics are aware that Billy’s powers share many traits with Wanda’s but have some unique differences, we aimed to highlight those similarities while also showcasing Billy’s distinctive style or flair.

Locke mentioned that he mimicked Olsen’s hand movements during the sequence where Billy demonstrates his ability for the first time by burying Agatha. He further explained that according to the script, this action was described as “Teen performing a gesture reminiscent of one previously seen, swiftly sending Agatha off the Road.

New episodes of “Agatha All Along” debut Wednesday at 9pm ET on Disney+.
