China Box Office: ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ Rerelease Opens in Second Place

As someone who grew up in the magical world of Hogwarts, watching “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” ignite the big screen once again brings back fond memories. It was during my school years when multiplexes were just emerging in China, and the “Harry Potter” films were a revelation. They showcased a level of storytelling and special effects that left us spellbound. Although box office comparisons may be meaningless due to the rapid evolution of China’s film industry since then, I am thrilled to see these enchanting tales captivating audiences once more.

Over the recent weekend, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” came in second in the Chinese mainland box office, marking the start of a series of re-releases for the entire “Harry Potter” series.

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of reviewing “The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death,” which claimed the number one spot at the box office, bringing in an impressive RMB77.4 million ($10.9 million) during its second full week in Chinese cinemas. As per data from Artisan Gateway, since its release on September 30, perfectly timed to capture the entire National Day holiday period, this Chen Kaige-directed film has amassed a staggering $139 million. Remarkably, “The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death” is the second installment of a three-part series that began exactly a year ago with “The Volunteers: To the War.

The movie ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ made approximately $6.6 million in earnings. Warner Bros. Pictures, the production company behind this franchise, announced that the films will be shown in around 3,400 theaters across 295 Chinese cities. The screenings will offer both standard 2D versions and several premium formats like CINITY, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema. Last weekend, Imax reported that their China screens contributed about $1.8 million to the film’s total weekend earnings.

The “Harry Potter” movies were made from 2001 to 2011, during a period when multiplexes were just emerging in China, and the country’s film industry was rapidly developing in terms of production, distribution, and exhibition. As a result, comparing box office earnings becomes largely irrelevant. Instead, the remaining seven titles will be released on a weekly basis from October through November.

Over the weekend, the Chinese crime drama titled “Tiger Wolf Rabbit” ranked third, earning approximately $4.1 million. Since its release in October, it has accumulated a total of $58 million.

In the fourth spot, the movie “High Forces,” starring Andy Lau, grossed $3.6 million this week. Since its release on September 30, it has amassed a total of $33 million in earnings.

Originally placed third, the movie “Panda Plan” starring Jackie Chan has dropped down to fifth position. In its first month since release on October 1st, it has amassed a total box office earnings of $34.9 million, with a weekend take of $3.0 million.
