‘Unstable’ Canceled After Two Seasons at Netflix

As a dedicated fan of the Lowes’ family dynamic, I must say that “Unstable” was a delightful and refreshing addition to my streaming queue. The show’s unique premise, combined with the real-life father-son duo portraying a troubled yet endearing relationship, made it an engaging watch.

The comedy series featuring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, titled “Unstable,” has been discontinued following its run of two seasons on Netflix.

Beginning on March 30, 2023, a humorous office-themed series debuted on Netflix, followed by its second season on Aug. 1, 2024. This show centered around Rob Lowe portraying Ellis Dragon, the CEO and creator of a biotech firm who grappled with life following his wife’s passing. Intriguingly, Lowe’s real-life son, Jackson, was cast as his estranged son in the company. Despite pursuing a career as a flute player, he chose to join the family business. The plotline also delved into Ellis’ mental health issues and his rekindled relationship with his son. The series capitalized on the unique aspect of having the Lowes play an unconventional father-son duo, with Rob Lowe portraying a quirky CEO and his son exhibiting high levels of stress.

John Owen shared with EbMaster that it was only by working together on a TV series that he and Rob could delve into the deeper aspects of their personal bond. So, he thought, why not have Ellis and Jackson portray characters to help them resolve an interpersonal issue? This, John explained, is a subtle nod to the dynamic we’re exploring in the show regarding our father-son relationship.

In the TV show “Unstable,” both Lowe brothers served as executive producers. The star-studded cast featured Sian Clifford, Aaron Branch, Rachel Marsh, Emma Pilar Ferreira, Fred Armisen, Town Allen, JT Parr, Christina Chang, Lamorne Morris, and Iris Apatow. By the end of Season 2, Ellis made a significant move by resigning from his company and declaring his intention to run for President of the United States.

Regarding a possible Season 3, Rob shared his eagerness to watch Ellis navigate and possibly shine in an unique manner as he sets up his campaign. He also hinted at Fred Armisen’s character, Leslie, potentially running a campaign, perhaps with Jackson taking on the role of Bobby Kennedy to Ellis’ Jack Kennedy. They are keenly interested in portraying Ellis being thrilled about Jackson becoming the first son.
